CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Beb, April 15 On Friday evening a very enjoyable euchre party was given by the fendalton dramatic club in the Kindergarten schoolroom, which was nicely arranged and prettily decorated for the occasion. Mrs B. Portal and Mrs H. Barker were the lucky winners of the first prizes— two little electro lamps, most useful things. Among the number of smart and tasteful demi-evening costumes I noticed Mrs Denniston, in dark skirt and white muslin biouse with pink ribbous ; Mrs Harry Meares. pretty gown of black velvet and ere un lace in demi-even-ing style ; Mrs J. Little, black velvet gown ; Mrs Malcolm, dark skirt and coral pink soft silk crepon blouse ; Mrs Harry Simms cream skirt and handsome blue velvet blouse : Mrs Portal, cerise silk gown with picture buttons ; Mrs Bishop black silk and jet; Misses Becket, in cream; Miss E. Russell, dark skirt, blue and black blouse; Miss Macpherson, black gown with large white lace collar ; Messrs H. Meares B. PortaL J. Little. H Cotterill. Humphreys, Neave. Malcolm, Macpherson. Latter, and Jackson were some of those present. The Rev. C. J. and Mrs Merton held an

‘ AT HOME ’ on Tuesday afternoon in the Merivale schoolroom, which was made to look as cosy as a large room with bare walls can be with carpets, rugs, easy chairs, small tables, and flowers. Mrs W. D. Meares with her daughters worked very hard to make it a success. and I am sure Mr and Mrs Merton were pleased to have the opportunity of wishing their parishioners and old friend- • goodbye ’ before setting out for their new home in MonganuL A numerous band of girls assisted with the afternoon tea, and

several good songs were sung by Mias Kinsey. Mias Fraser (Melbourne). Mr L Gibbs, and others. Mr and Mrs Merton are the guests of Mr and Mrs Gibbs until they leave for the North. Among the many present were the Bishop and Mrs Julius, the Hon. Mrs Parker. Mr and Mrs H. R. Webb. Mr and Mrs Common. Mr and Mrs G. Martin. Mr and Mrs H. D. Carter. Mr and Mrs Marchant. Mesdamea Birch-Brown. Vaughan Jones. Downes, and numerous*others. Mr and Mrs Merton have been the recipients of some useful presents in token of goodwill and regret at losing them, but there is the hope they will both improve in health with a warmer climate. AT POLO. Warm winter wraps enveloped everybody, and very becoming some of them were. Mrs Arthur Rhodes wore a handsome velvet cape lined with white; Mrs H. H. Pitman, lovely sealskin coat; Mrs J. D Hall, long buff driving coat; also Misses Nedwill and Miss Wilson (Cuiverden). the Misses Henry, in black with braided jackets; Miss Graham (Dunedin), a brown costume ; Mesdames Alister Clarke. Denniston. H. Cotterill. Heaton Rhodes. Hon. Parker, G. Gould. Misses Tabart, Gerard, Palmer, etc., were among the onlookers. The Mesmerist Kennedy is holding high carnival here, and really from a scientific point of view it is interesting to know how anyone can get such power over people. The Brunner relief fund still grows. The concert given last week in the Temple of Truth was a success, the sports to be held to-morrow, finishing with another concert in the evening, again in the Temple of Truth, promise well too. We are looking forward to Mdlle. Trebelli’s concert on Friday evening as something specially good. Dolly Vale.
