AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, October 21. One or two mild dissipations have come in my way, and a dance. Mrs McLaughlin, of ‘ Puhi Nui,’ Papatoitoi, gave a LARGE AFTERNOON TEA as a farewell to her niece. Miss Thomas, who leaves Auckland on Monday en route for England. • Puhi Nui ’is such a picturesque pl a ce. r D l ® re is a mile of straight level avenue before you reach the house, lined on either side with large trees. Two creeks have to be forded about knee deep in water at the entrance of the avenue which makes it quite rural in aspect, and cooling to the horses feet after their long journey. Mrs McLaughlin received her numerous guests in her usual courteous manner, and was assisted to entertain them by the Misses McLaughlin, Thomas, and Banks. Musical items were rendered by various of the guests. The gem of the afternoon was the whistling of various songs by Miss Grey, who accompanied herself on the piano; it was very beautiful, something like a flute, but only sweeter. Of course the gifted young lady was forced to make a long stay at the piano to please the enthusiastic guests. The visitors were invited to wander on the pretty rose-covered verandah and through the garden, which was quite gay with our hostess’ choice flowers. Mrs McLaughlin is extremely fond of horticulture. A large peacock with his numerous wives strutted proudly around the front of the house showing his glorious tail to every one’s admiration. The distance being so great from town, many of the guests rode, while others drove, and some took advantage of the t . ra^n » the station not being very far from Mr McLaughlin’s estate. Afternoon tea was served in the dining-room, which was uniquely decorated with nil green silk draped in art folds down the centre of the table, and finished with vases of apple blossoms. Trifles and jellies, cakes, etc., with tea and coft’ee were dispensed to the guests during the afternoon. Ample justice was done to these tempting viands, as everybody had an appetite after the long journey out. Mrs McLaughlin looked dixti nf/ucc as ever in a black gown with heliotrope silk trimmings veiled in black lace : Miss McLaughlin, grey skirt with white blouse; Miss Thomas, dark skirt, canary coloured cr£pon blouse; Miss Edith Banks, dark skirt, pretty sky blue nun’s veiling blouse with Empire sash; Mrs Grey, I think, wore a black gown; Miss Grey, dark skirt, gamboge blouse: Mrs Sam Morrin. black; Miss Dunnett, neat fitting brown: Miss Percival, grey, and her sister, brown; Mrs Bullock Webster, black gown relieved with white: Miss Phoebe Buckland (who has just returned from England), wore a lovely black crepe skirt, grey flowered silk blouse with Bishop’s sleeves, white sailor hat; Mrs Harry Tonks, dark skirt, terre blouse; Mrs (Dr.) Bews, Mrs Chapman, black; Mrs Gilmore. Misses Maud Buckland, Rosa Bull, W. Kerr-Taylor had donned their riding habits, having ridden out; Mrs Charlton Dawson, navy serge finished with absinthe green silk ; Miss Elliot, Misses Yonge, Bailey, Brodie, etc. There were a great many others present, but of those I forgot to take note, as I was so interested in our pretty surroundings.. Of course there were some from Otahuhu I did not know. Miss Sereta McLaughlin gave a splendid recitation, which was highly appreciated. The last dance of the series of the REM L’ERA SOCIAL I NIONS took place on Thursday in the Remuera Hall, and it proved a greater success than any of the prior ones. About sixty couples graced the floor, which was in excellent order, and the music good, so a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent. The gentlemen were slightly in the majority. The hall was capitally decorated with flags, the stage being adorned with the queenly arum lily and its foliage. 'l’he supper-rcom in the gallery was more extensively decorated. Canary-coloured muslin draped the arches, finished with a small yellow flower with green leaves. The supper table had moss green silk draped artistically up the centre, finished with vases of flowers, and from the gas chandelier hung a basket of flowers which drooped prettily on to the table. The supper was a dainty one. consisting of oysters, trifles, jellies, fruit and sweets of every description. Mr Henry Johnstone. the Secretary, has done his best to make a success of the series of dances, and for the energetic way he has worked, much praise and congratulation must be accorded him.
