PATEA.

Dear Bke, July 18. I am sorry you did not get my last letter, with the account of juvenile dance, assembly, and the ‘ At Home ’ given by Mrs W. Cowern in honour of the Premier s wife, who was paying a visit for the first time to this coast. I suppose letters do get mislaid sometimes, so it can't be helped. OUR ANNUAL CHURCH SOCIAL came off, and was a great success The songs were much appreciated. and the supper and dance that followed exceedingly enjoyed by all. The ladies and gentlemen assisting in the vocal part of theentei t linment were Miss Hunter. Misses Cowen, Misses Hamerton (two). Miss Baxter. Miss Symes, Mesdames Harper, Munro. Matthews and Horner. Messrs Hamerton. Munro. Jollie, Matthews. Cornwall. Guise, Rigg, Horner. A recitation by Miss Gower was particularly good. Our last ASSEMBLY was delightful, though the weather was anything but pleasant, a number of ladies and gentlemen from Hawera considerably adding to the enjoyment. The dresses were specially charming. Mrs C. C. Harper looked very well in pink silk; Mrs Bremer, white; Mrs Matthews, white; Mrs Munro, blue crepon ; Miss Testar. crimson silk; Miss Guise (Christchurch), yellow silk; Miss Blakiston (Christchurch), black trimmed vih blue; Miss Jollie, black velvet and silk bodice; Mrs T. Symes C. Symes. H. E. Adams, Shields. Peacocke, Miss Turner. Mrs Christie. Munro, Gibson, Walter Jones, Newton, Mair, Buchanan (Hawera). etc. Hawera is very fortunate in having such a good MUSICAL SOCIETY. They have been playing the ‘ Mikado' very successfully. Misses Knight. Adamson, and Duckworth taking three little maids with Miss Knight as Yum Yum. Mrs Parsons undertook the difficult part of Katisha splendidly. The dresses, scenery, and staging, were specially good, and cost no end of money, I hear. One of Hawera’s popular bank clerks, Mr F. Smith, has just left Hawera and the bank, intending to join the ranks of auctioneers. We wish him success. A most enjoyable little dance was given for him, but being on Saturday, had, of course, to ’ o’clock.
