WINTER EVENINGS' AMUSEMENTS.
A correspondent to an Exchange has the following description of a good evening’s amusement : — ‘ The entertainment began at 7 30. The room was very full, bat as it was a school-house, it did not, of course, hold so very many people. The programme began with a pianoforte solo, followed by a very amusing tableau taken from the advertisement of Pear’s soap, * Will she win the gloves ?’ One tablean ia the programme which was especially pretty was called ‘The Snow ijaeen,’and represented her surrounded by her subjects. The queen was one of my sisters ; she was dressed in soft white muslin drapery with shining ornaments on her hair and neck, and a few about her dress ; she held a gold wand with a star at the end, and stood raised above her subjects, who were also dressed in soft draped muslin and were grouped about her in various positions. Just before the curtain drew up, we were all sprinkled with artificial hoar-frost, which sparkled and made all the dresses show up. A tableau called " The Seasons,’ which some people thought the bestof all, showed the goddess Ceres dressed in white draped muslin, holding flowers in her hand, and with some arranged in her hair and on her dress. Kneeling round her and offering her gifts typical of the seasons they represented, were her four subjects, “ Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.” Summer wore a pink muslin dress with wreaths of roses ; Spring a green muslin with primroses and moss ; winter, a white dress with red berries ; and Autumn, an orange-coloured muslin with autumnal leaves and ferns arranged on it. We were preparing for it a long time beforehand, and I think on the whole our trouble was repaid, as it all seemed to be much appreciated.
