CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, February 7. The opera season and a race meeting have made us feel QUITE GAY AGAIN. The former is simply delightful, only if the company remained too long in any one place, the community would grow prematurely wrinkled from over-laughing, they are so good all round The special humour, however, generally comes from Mr Lauri aided and abetted by Miss Nash. Miss Nellie Stewart is charming and wonderfully clever, making all her roles so distinctly different, and her dresses are magnificent. Mr Brownlow is a great favourite, and has a good stage presence. Immense audiences have greeted them this week Amongst the many I have noticed Mr and Mrs Stead Mrs and Miss Garrick and Dr. Meares. Mr and Mrs P. Campbell Dr. and Mrs Guthrie, Miss Fairhurst, Mrs Towsey (Auckland!’ Mr and Mrs Rhind, Mr and Mrs Gibbs, Mr and Miss Kinsey and Mies Ingham (Melbourne). Mrs Macrae, Mr and Mrs W. C Hill Mr and Mrs Waymouth. Mrs and Misses Greenwood, Mrs Humphreys, Misses Wynn-Williams, Miss Richardson, Mr and Mrs G Harris. Mrs Secretan, Misses Way, Mrs Stansfield (Wellington) Miss Mowbray (Wellington). Mr and Mrs Ainger, Misses Kiver Miss Hargreaves. Captain Anderson, Misses Anderson and Smith’ Mrs and Misses Cunningham, Mr P. Cunningham (junr.), Mr and Mrs H. Nelson, and many more. THE SUMMER RACE MEETING on the Riccarton course was a very pleasant little gathering of friends, not at all like the crowded, excited throng of Show week The dresses, too, most of them, were old friends, and one feltquite at home in them with no fears as to how they were to be worn It was warm enough to make white and light costumes enjoyable. Mrs G. G. Stead had a white serge with gold braid on the skirt the wide sailor collar and cuffs trimmed the same, small floral bonnet; Mrs Cunningham, vleux rose and sage green patterned material, revers on the bodice of vleux rose silk, small bonnet to match ; the Misses Cunningham, pretty gowns of grey and pink hats to match; the Hon. Mrs Parker, light sage green costume lined with pale pink silk, large cream hat; Miss Baldwin, naw blue ; Mrs Stevens, black velvet with bands of black raoirt tiny floral bonnet; Mrs Boyle, greeny grey checked silk, bodice frills lined with lemon-coloured silk; Mrs P. Campbell, fawn cloth coat and skirt, light vest; Mrs G. Gould, pink ertpon with black gul-

nure lace trimming, black picture hat: Mrs Rhind. fawn corded silk trimmed with bands of green and gold satin embroidery ; Mrs G. Wood, pretty fancy material of green, heliotrope and cream, vest of heliotrope silk and gold passementerie: Mrs Bullock (Timaru). all black costume; Mrs Buchanan, black silk and brocade; Mrs Otterson. Mis* Palmer, Miss Tabart. Miss Roberta; Miss Nellie Stewart looked charming in lettuce green checked silk with black moire swathe belt fastened with paste buckles, long ends of black ribbon falling to the feet, the bodice trimmed with beautiful cream lace, large black picture hat; Miss Nash was m a very pretty pale grey. On Tuesday Mrs Buller, Papanui, gave a SMALL LUNCHEON PARTY for Mrs Burke, who at present is her guest. Among those Present were Mrs W. D. Meares, Mrs Common, Mrs Gibbs. Mrs W. C. Hill. Mrs Graham Greenwood and one or two others. Miss Ollivier has just been spending a month with Mrs Buller, and has now returned to Nelson. Mrs Arch. Scott had an AFTERNOON TEA on Wednesday, when a very pleasant time was spent. Some of the guests were Hrs Crichton and Miss Cook, Mrs G. Anderson, Mrs R. Brown. Mrs Carter and others. Mrs Helmore was very unfortunate, the day fixed for her TENNIS PARTY being showery and boisterous, though both tennis and croquet were played by some of the more enthusiastic. Tea and other refreshments were served indoors, and it was a great disappointment not to be able to take full advantage of the very pretty grounds. Miss Helmore ably assisted her mother, and looked well in fawn coat and skirt, and yellow silk vest; Mrs Arthur Reeves, dark green cashmere trimmed with black silk ; Miss Eva Helmore in black, prettily trimmed with cream lace. Among the guests were Mrs R. Macdonald, Mrs Otterson, Misses Reeves, Cowlishaw, Campbell (two), Wynn-Williams (two), Potts, Bowen, Moorhouse, Messrs Beswick, Cowlishaw, Reeves, Perry, WynnWilliams, etc. OUR PEOPLE. Mr and Mrs Greenwood and their daughters are leaving shortly to reside in Dunedin, and we are very sorry to lose them. I very much regret to tell you of the death of Miss Blanche Hennah on Saturday at the Christchurch Hospital, of typhoid fever. Miss Hennah had only just returned from Wellington, where she had been staying with Mrs R. Loughnan. The greatest sympathy is felt for Mrs Hennah in her sudden and sore bereavement. losing one of so gentle and sweet a disposition as her daughter possessed. She also leaves many sorrowing girl friends.
