WELLINGTON.
Dear Bee, January 16. I am afraid that there will be a SCARCITY OF SOCIAL NEWS until next week. The races are to be on the 22nd and 23rd of this month, and the Comic Opera Company open their season on Monday night, so that it will be a particularly gay week for us at this time of ibe year. I only hope the weather will be as line as it was last Anniversary Day for Cup Day, as I hear there are lo be a number of new frocks worn on that day. so of course I am anxious for the sun to shine forth on that occasion. The Rev. Dr. and Mrs Wallis arrived last Thursday. They are to be guests at Government House until Bishopscourt is ready for them. It will be quite like old times to see Bishopscourt inhabited once more. It looked quite deserted after Bishop and Mrs Hadfield and family had gone. POLO. On Saturday afternoon last, again a fair number of people assembled to witness the polo played on the ground at Miramar Among those present were the Ladies Augusta. Alice, and Dorothy Boyle, Mrs H. Crawford. Mrs A. Crawford. Mrs and Miss Johnston, the Misses Grace, the Misses Williams, Cooper Skerritt, and others. OUB PEOPLE. The Misses W. Johnston have gone up to Hawke’s Bay, where they will stay with Mrs Sydney Johnston, and are also to be present at Miss Cara Russell's wedding, which takes place early next month. Miss Duncan has gone South for a short visit Mr and Mrs H Bell have also gone South. Sir Patrick and Lady Buckley entertained Mr and Miss Burn, of Queensland, at a luncheon party, at their pretty residence. Lower Very shortly I hope to be able to tell you of the wedding of Miss Bessie Tuckey to Mr Henry Hadfield, A large reception which was to have been given at Government House on Friday night was postponed on account of illness of the Governor. It was to have been given for Rev. Dr. and Mrs Wallis Mies Edith Brown has returned from Australia, and is wearing a pale blue drill costume, black hat with cornflowers. Miss Babbington. of Christchurch, is staying with Mrs Friend and Miss Izard is staying with Miss Bennett at Bulls. There was a very fair attendance for the time of year at MB BARNETT’S ORGAN RECITAL given in St. John’s Church. Government House was represented and their party and lovers of music generally were much pleased with the performance. The organ is an excellent one. and under the skilled fingers of Mr Barnett, produced sounds of exquisite grace and sweetness, richness and power. Two sacred solos by Mr J. Prouse elicited many favourable comments as soon as the recital was ended. These recitals are to be given monthly and no doubt will become extremely popular.
Ophelia.
