Dear Bee, August 29. The FIRST LEIDERTAFEL CONCERT was an unprecedented success, and there was a fashionable audience, including Mrs and the Misses Ormond, Mrs N. Kettle, Mrs Margolionth, Mrs George Morris. Mrs and Miss Cornford, Mrs Maughan Barnett, Captain and Mrs East. Mr and Mrs Dicken, Lady Whitmore, Mrs Ernest Dixon, etc., etc. The part singing. under the able baton of that energetic conductor, Mr Maughan Barnett, was most enjoyable, and Mr Barnett’s grand piano solos, of which he contributed no less than three, were the most attractive items on the programme. Mr Davidson was in good voice, and his songs were the most acceptable of the solo-sing-ing. more especially his encore. Ajerult’s ‘Last Night.’ The following evening the Leidertafel SERENADED MADAME BELLE COLE after the conclusion of her successful programme. The serenading took place on the Masonic Hotel verandah, the singers being all together at one end, and Madame Cole and her party at the other end. The Chinese blinds were drawn down and the gas lit. and it looked very picturesque, the ladies still in their evening gowns and cloaks and wraps. After the conclusion of the serenading Mr Maughan B irnett was presented to Madame Cole, and she personally thanked him for the great compliment the Leidertafel had paid her. Mr Barnett then with Madame Cole proceeded to the end where the serenaders were, and Madame said to them that she had heard it was a new society, and that she had experienced great pleasure in listening to their glees, and wished them every success. Mrs Swan and Mrs Close planted two pohutukawa trees to celebrate the event, amid a heavy shower of rain, both ladies gallantly sticking to their post amid the cheers of the crowd. It being our half holiday every one was there. A numbei of ladies, at the invitation of Mr and Mrs Frank Moeller, witnessed the proceedings from the capacious balcony of the Masonic Hotel, and afternoon tea was dispensed ad lib by Mrs Moeller and Miss Ryan, her sister, for which one and all were exceedingly grateful, for what is more refreshing than the cup that cheers, but does not inebriate? Some smart gowns were worn despite the showery afternoon. Mrs Clo-e, brown skirt handsome jet mantle and bonnet; Miss Hobbs, who always looks well, wore black, stylish hat ; Mrs Swan, a pretty brown costume; Mrs Frank Moeller was as usual much admired in a neat black costume with Tattersail vest; her sister also donned black relieved with moire; Miss Tuke wore a pretty costume of black with heliotrope vest, stylish hat with heliotrope flowers ; Miss Faulknor, fawn with beaver trim mi ug ; Miss Gibbs, black costume; Mrs Turnbull, brown; Mrs East, navy blue serge, rA/r sailor hat; Miss Miller, navy blue: Miss Carter, green ; Miss Fernandez, her stylish red cloak, dark skirt; Miss Gleeson, black and white: Miss Hilda Hitchings. black jacket, stylish black hat.
