NAPIER.

Dear Bee, July 28. The Cinderella was A GREAT SUCCESS last Friday night, but owing to so many having influenza there were a number of absentees. However there were a great many strange faces there to make up for it. Miss Ring wood (Wellington) looked very dainty in white ; Miss McVay wore a striking dress of cardinal silk; h«r sister. Miss Ella McVay, was the rfrbutante in white: Miss Troutbeck wore white silk ; Miss Mardon was admired in blue, and Miss Simcox looked exceedingly pretty in a white gown with yellow sleeves: Miss Glendinning had a handsome dress of pale pink with white chiffon; Miss Heath, black and pale blue sleeves ; Miss Guy, a dainty white frock ; Miss Wise, two shades of heliotrope : Miss Lascelles, yellow relieved with black; Mrs Walter Tabuteau. pink and olive green ; Miss Hilda Fulton looked very pretty in pale blue ; Miss Borner, black and yellow ; Miss Rhodes, yellow silk: Mrs Arthur Kennedy, black silk and pink sleeves; Mrs Ludlow was admired in pale blue with lace : Miss Sutton pale blue net: Miss F. Sutton, yellow; Miss Jago. white: Miss Maitland (Dunedin! looked one of the best in the room ; Miss Fulton wore a pretty shade of yellow ; Miss Chapman, olive green and white lace; Miss McGowan, white; Miss G. Hughes, black with cardinal sleeves: Miss Florence Baker, heliotrope silk: Miss Newton, yellow; Miss Daisy Newton, red silk : Miss Take. terracotta silk. The extras were supplied by Mrs Heath and Messrs Rudman and Dasent. The improvements in the arrangements and decorations reflected great credit on the energetic new lessee, Mr Leitch.

OUR PEOPLE. Mr and Mrs Logan have been ill with influenza. Their house had a narrow escape from tire the night of the ball, caused through a defective chimney. Fortunately. Mrs discovered the fire before it had a strong hold. Mr and Mrs Nat Kettle have returned from a lengthened stay with Mr Von Tempsky in Honolulu. Mrs Von Tempsky has also come back with her daughter, Mrs Kettle. How delightful these trips must be to the South Sea Islands to those who can afford it, for although a considerable reduction has been made in the fares, yet twenty pounds is a great deal when you take into consideration that you are all the time on the sea. Not many of our Hawke’s Bay residents went last trip. I think I only heard of one. viz.. Mr Newbould. Perhaps more will go next time. The Gothic was in the bay. but to the disappointment of many no one was allowed on board to inspect this colossal steamer. Mrs and the Misses Henderson, of Christchurch, who have been staying in Napier for some weeks, left for Sydney last Saturday for a few months.

Messrs Canning and Smith’s beautiful yacht that was built for them in Auckland has been christened the Atalanta. It is delicately painted in white and gold, and the owners are much to be envied for possessing such a well built yacht. The cost of it, I hear. waw nver Ava hundred nonndu

hear, was over five hundred pounds.

Gladys.
