HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, July 22. The only excitement this week has been a FANCY DRKSB BALL in aid of the Fire Brigade, which was held in the Princess Theatre on the 18th. The hall was very prettily decorated with flags and evergreens, and the dance was a great success. Some of the dresses were very pretty. Mrs J. Nelson Williams wore crushed strawberry silk, with black lace draped over bodice and skirt; Miss Russell looked very well as Mistress Prue, in a canary satin polonaise over a quilted skirt of myrtle green, powdered wig; Miss Gertrude Russell. Carmen, purple bodice laced over red front, white chemisette, purple skirt with two broad bands of different shades of red round the bottom, and a red sash tied at the side; Miss E. Williams, handsome cream satin gown made with big puffed sleeves, lace epaulettes. Among the gentlemen Mr Heathcote Williams Frimley’> looked very well as a Chinese Lantern ; Mr Harold Russell. Officer’s Undress Uniform ; Mr Guy Cooper, Gentleman of the Nineteenth Century; Mr K. Williams (Wairarapa), Undergraduate ; Mr Pattison, Sixteenth Century Knight. OUR PEOPLE. Influenza is still raging. Tomoana has been attacked, and Mr H. Warren is down with it, while Mr M. Fenwick and Mr Pinkney have been ordered to Auckland to recover from the effects. I am glad to say that Mrs Tipping is much better. She is at present on a visit to Mrs Lanauze. Mrs Galwey has had a very bad influenza cold, from which she is just recovering. We hope soon to see her about again. This is indeed a chronicle of ills. Mr Fifzroy is about again, though looking very much pulled down from his recent illness. Miss Nelson and her sister have returned from their trip Home. Mrs James Brathwaite and Miss Brathwaite are staying at • Frimley,’ and Miss Berkely and Miss Gleeson are staying in the country with Mrs G. Beamish.

Dolly.
