AUCKLAND AMUSEMENTS.

CHORAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT. THE concert given by the Choral Society, which took place after we had gone to press last Tuesday, could scarcely have teen moi e thorougely successful. The programme was attractive in the extreme, and so compiled thab the tastes of everyone were catered for. Miss

Reeves in Mendelssohn’s Concerto delighted the true lovers of classical music, and the excellent rendering of • Patience,' an overture of Suppe, and some very curious music by Bizet pleased everyone. The most successful vocalists were Mr S. C. Johnston, who met with agreat reception, and Mr 11. Brett, jun., who made his debut in the Choral Hall. This young singer has a pleasant voice, and only requires plenty of work and plenty of practice to develop into a valuable vocalist. MONTAGUE TURNER OPERA COMPANY. Very great sympathy is felt in Auckland for Miss Annis Montagne, of the Montague-Turner Opera Company, who has been compelled to resume her roles on the stage in the various operas, the performance of which was temporarily suspended owing to the death of Mr Turner, allusion to which melancholy event is made elsewhere. The public will have an opportunity of showing their practical sympathy to-night (Wednesday) when Miss Annis Montague (Mrs Turner) takes her benefit, and it is to be hoped that a very crowded house will testify that Aucklanders, as nsual, are willing to respond liberally to any demand on their feelint’s or purees. • CHARLEY’S AUNT.’ Little does • Charley’s Aunt,’ now nearing Auckland, reck of the puff direct, indirect, oblique, or puff by implication. This famous personage, who makes her bow to Auckland audiences, does not ask for public support. She is a potentate, and a mighty one, and she commands it. From all over the world the very mention of the lady from Brazil—where thennts come from—raises a delighted laugh. • The funniest thing on record ’ is not merely the newspaper verdict, but that of the public all over the colony. Doubtless Auckland will laugh as heartily as the rest of the colony, and then the genial Lohr will pilot 1 Charley’s Aunt ’ to fresh pastures. POPULAR WINTER CONCERT. The last of the very enjoyable concerts arranged by Mr Gee takes place on Thursday night, and is sure to command a large audience. The price for admission is very decidedly what should meet the popular taste, especially when good singers, such as those advertised for to-morrow night, are to sing. PONSONBY ‘AT HOME.’ A thoroughly successful and enjoyable evening is anticipated for the third monthly dance of the Ponsonby •At Homes’ on Friday next. For particulars re busses, etc., intending visitors are requested to notice our advertising columns.
