DUNEDIN.

Dear Bee, May 5. A great deal of gaiety has been going on this week owing to the numerous visitors, who are here at present. Mrs J. T. Wright (Bishopscourt) gave a SMALL DANCE on Monday evening. The house was. as usual, tastefully decorated with flowers, pot plants, and palms. Mrs Wright wore a most becoming dress of black silk ; Miss Wright, a pretty white dress made in Empire style; Miss Roberts, stylish black trimmed with white satin, ruffles of real black lace down the front; Miss Bartieman. simple dress of pink silk ; Miss Gibson, pink bodice edged with passementerie ; Miss R. Neill, stylish white dress with white silk embroidery; Miss Shand, white and yellow. Amongst others I noticed the Misses Neill. Maccassey, Roberts, Spence. Reynolds, Rattray, Williams, Mills, Shand, Maclaren, and others. On Tuesday night the Misses Farquhar gave A LARGE MUSICAL’EVENING AND DANCE. The table was beautifully decorated with crinkled paper and flowers. Music and dancing were kept going in different rooms all the evening. This arrangement was a most successful one, and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Mrs Farquhar wore a handsome gown of black velvet; Miss Farquhar was beautifully attired in a pink silk, the bodice trimmed with bunches of pink carnations; Miss Edith Farquhar also wore pink prettily trimmed with long streamers of roses; Miss Violet Farquhar, white dress with yellow velvet; Miss B. Farquhar, extremely dainty white muslin, the bodice made with a white muslin fichu and frills, the skirt all one-inch-wide frills from the waist to the foot. Mrs Dowling looked nice in an elegant dress of black silk, lavishly trimmed with heliotrope; Mrs Montague Pym, the guest of the evening, wore a rich black silk, magnificent diamond crescent clasping the front of the bodice; Mis’ Johnstone (Melbourne) was dressed in white satin trimmed with yellow bandeau, and a large diamond crescent in her hair. Other guests present were the Misses Reynolds. Scott, Bartlemar. Neill. Roberts. Maccassey. Mackerras, Sise, Maclean, Sargood (Melbourne), Gilkison, Stephenson, and others. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs James Allen (‘Arana’), gave a large MUSICAL ‘AT HOME.’ The table looked nice decorated with white Japanese chrysanthemums. During the afternoon many songs and pianoforte solos were given by different ladies and gentlemen. Mrs Petrie played several times, Mrs Mills and Mr Harry Martin sang a duet, Mr Martin also sang ‘ Mora,’ and one or two other songs. Miss R. Reynolds sang ‘ Don’t Quite Forget.’and Miss Roberts rendered ‘Ocean.’ most tastefully. Miss Dale (England) gave some delightful pianoforte solos, as did also Miss Ina Allen. Mrs Allen wore a stylish rainbow tweed; Miss Ina Allen, pretty green tweed : Mrs Richards, handsome black bengaline trimmed with jet; Mrs Mills, handsome black silk, bodice embossed with gold, large black velvet hat trimmed with feathers and steel buckles ; Miss Reynolds, olive green cape and large black hat; her sister was attired in a neat blue serge, pretty feather boa and large blue feather hat ; Miss Bartloman, olive green tailormade serge dress, brown hat trimmed with brown velvet, heliotrope and yellow flowers: Miss Roberts, shot blue tweed, black jacket trimmed with fur; Mrs Nevill. black costume; Miss Perkins, neat, costume of brown hopsack, brown hat; Miss Dale (England), black erdpon trimmed with heliotrope, large velvet hat; Mrs Oliver, blue shot silk, bonnet to match : Mrs George Maclean, handsome black brocade with lace trimmings, black cape edged with red, and bonnet to match ; Miss B. Maclean, black and green ; Miss S. Webster, myrtle green costume trimmed with grey astrachan. green feather hat; Mrs Batchelor, black trimmed with white insertion, full capo to match; Miss De Salamos, cigar brown cloth and hat to match, prettily trimmed with black ostrich tips and velvet bows; Mrs

Orbell (Waimate), stylish black serge, with a brown waistroa brown and black hat. A LARGE AFTERNOON TEA was given by Mrs Sir good (RomanotT* for Miss Sargood (Melbourne) on Tnuraday afternoon. The table was uniquely decorated, with red and green paper and holly berries. The cakes, which were most delicious, were procured from Freeman’s (Christchurch). A little music was given during the afternoon, but the chief entertainment was a fortune-teller, who received the guests by twos in a small room lit up by fairy lamps and candies. Mrs Sargood was in a very pretty delaine trimmed with yellow and heliotrope silk ; Miss Sargood, fawn cloth and electric blue silk. Noticeable dresses were worn by the Misses Maclean, Farquhar, Stephenson, MacDonald, Taylor. Carew. MacKerras, Ulrich. Roberts, Wright, Greenwood (Christchurch). Reynolds, Dale (England/, and many others. On Friday evening Miss Francis Davidson gave a children’s party at St. Paul’s Schoolroom as a farewell before leaving with her mother for Invercargill. About eighty were present, and with the exception of a few all wore white. During the week two dinner parties were given, one by Mrs Oliver, and the other by Mrs Sinclair Thomson.
