GOVERNMENT HOUSE BALL.
THE dance given at Auckland Government House on Monday was in every way successful, though being Monday night, many of the gentleman invited were unable to be present. The large ball room was prettily decorated with tree ferns, nikau, and flags, the upper end being arranged in drawing*room fashion with large comfortable chairs and lounges. The floor was in good order and the music excellent. The corridors and passages were hung with flags and furnished with divans and lounge chairs, and the drawingroom was effectively arranged with large lamp with huge yellow silk shade which shed a very soft and pleasant light. Mrs Stewart and Lord Glasgow received the guests, assisted by Capt. Elliot and Capt. Clayton, A.D.C. Capt. Stewart was not present, having slightly strained his back in the recent shooting excursion.
