Dear Bee, January 23. A very enjoyable BOATING PICNIC took place the night before last, the night being simply perfect, in f«ct, the homeward journey was like being in fairyland. The e were ten boats, and as they glided smooth y down the river past shadows cast by large willows on the river banks, and now and then past a small cottage, and then right out in the broad stream of water. I cannot tell you how lox ely it ail was. Supper was laid on the banks of the rixer near Meanee, and some of the party went as far as the weir, which looked w’eiid in the moonlight. On this occasion there was plenty to eat—good substantial food, and delicacies ot all kinds. Some of those who were present were Mrs Hamlin and the Misses Fulton, 'I hornton (Te Aute), Rhodes. Huuhes, Maiden, Humphries. Mellinh (Christchurch), whose rowing was much admired, K. Hitchings, Hilda Hitching*, Hamlin, Gurr. Heath, Flossie Bell, and Messrs A. Kennedy, Rhodes. Firth. Becket, Gurr, Hughes, Dasent, Heath, and ever so many more. Mrs Vickerman (Hastings), Mrs Ihompson. Mr Robinson, the Misses Borlase. Baker, and Lascelles were unable to go. Had they gone another boat wou d have been required. Another picnic (this time in the inner harbour* is arranged for an early date. LAWN TENNIS. A great number of ladies and gentlemen attended yesterday at the bcinde Courts, which are looking beaut it üby green. Miss Hamlin provided afternoon tea in her usual nrsl-rate stylo, the cakes being most deli ious. The Misses Fulton very thoughtfully lit the fire, and had the kettle boiling by the time Mrs and Miss Ham in arrived at the courts. Some of those who were ure ent were Mesdames Baker, Hamlin, lhe Misses Lascelles, Borlase (Wellington). King (Auckland). Baker, Fulton (two), Rhodes. Sutton. Heath, and numbers more, and several gentlemen. Miss Lascelles looked very nice in dark bkirt, pretty blouse, and hat with scarlet poppies; Miss Baker looked nice in skirt, pink blouse, and white hat: Miss King was much admirtd in a white gown, pretty hat; Miss Hamlin looked handsome in her tennis skirt, light blouse, and white hat: and Mrs Hamlin looked very nice in her black skirt, light blouse, and becoming hat. A tournament is to be started very short ly. GOING AND COMING. Mrs Benson paid a filing \isil to Napier. She looks extremely well, and was going South in the Kotomahana. Her maid and lit e boy were on board while the steamer was lying outside. M s Benson was very stylishly gowned in navy butcher’s linen, bl ick hat with roses. Lean. H~r father has been removed from Auckland to Sydney, whither the family shortly go. Captain and Mrs E<st are s aying with Mr* Dewes. Mrs Vickerman (Hasting-) is stepping intown with her children to wive them the benefit of the sea bathing. Miss Boda*e (Wellingto •) is s ay ng with Mrs and Miss Baker, Whitmore and Mrs Dixon have gone to lhe Wairoa for change of air. They have taaen Mis* Dulcie Kenn* dy with them. Mr* Kettle and her daughter leave this week for the Sand wich Island*. Mr Gollan Newton (who i* on a visit to his parents from Australia) is looking remarkably well. BTKKKT GOWNS. Mrs Hoadlev. a grey summer tweed gown, black hat: Miss Hitchin/s, white and blue spotted cotton gown, tulle hat with yellow flower*; Mis* Kate Hitchings. flowe ed muslin gown, white tulle bat with white feathers; Miss Rhodes, who has just returned from Auckland, look* very nice in a pale pink gingham gown trimmed with whi’e insertion, black hat with pink; .Miss La see le* is stylish in a holland costume, pink shirt, white sailor hat: I noticed Mrs FVnwicke. who has just arrived from Hume, looking very smart in a pale blue gingham gown, white waistcoat. while kid shoes, white gloves, and xvhi e picture hat with white feathers: Mrs Vickerman looks very nice in heliotrope gown, sun-burnt straw sailor bat with black band.
