AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, January 16. The heat the end of last week was prostrating—the unusually warm wind blowing for three days being extremely enervating and trying. Still, we managed to visit various sports. I will begin with the ATTENDANCE AT POLO IN POTTER’S PADDOCK. Mrs W. Bloomfield was looking distinquee in white drill skirt, lace blouse, embroidery zouave, navy hat with daisies; Mrs Hope Lewis was attractive in slate grey with pink vest; Mrs Devereux, striking cornflower blue delaine with white lace; and one daughter wore piuk spotted gown, and another brown with red trimmings, hat en suite ; Miss Morse looked extremely pretty in blue flowered muslin, large hat with blue forget-me-nots: Miss Griffiths. Egypt yachting costume trimmed with white: Miss Bursill, cornflower blue skirt, white blouse, gem; Miss Power, ncat-fltting navy skirt, white blouse, gem : Miss Wilkins, stylish brown holland with black bands, heliotrope vest: the Misses Thorpe were similarly attired in white muslins, gem hats: Miss Moss, pretty white zephyr, large hat w’ith floral decorations, and her sister, brown skirt, pink blouse, gem hat: Miss Gordon, brown plaid skirt, white blouse, gem hat: Mis (Col.) Dawson looked well in a becoming Gobelin blue gown with white lace trimming, small straw hat; Mrs Elliot, black cashmere with handsome black lace cape, black lace bonnet with pink flowers ; Miss Elliot, blue crinkley gown, burnt straw sailor hat; Miss Dunnett, brown holland, sailor hat; Miss Percival, green skirt, white blouse, gem hat, and her sister, navy skirt, white blouse, and large flat hat; the three Misses Kerr-Taylor wore pink, grey, and white, respectively; Mrs Hanmer, black widow’s weeds; Miss Hilda Lewis looked exceedingly well in a neat-fitting navy serge, burnt straw flat sailor hat; Miss Firth, brown holland. and her friend, navy striped costume; Mr Philson and Mr Ware both looked delightfully cool in their white drills. Amongst the other gentlemen present were Messrs Claud Purchas. E. Moss-Davis, Markham, etc. Misses Hesketh and Firth were riding. TENNIS COSTUMES. On the Parnell lawn the courts were well filled with energetic players as well as spectators. Amongst them I noticed Mrs Blair, looking well in navy skirt, white blouse, gem; Mrs Tewesley, pretty cAtc costume—navy skirt, pink blouse, hat lined with wreath of pink roses; Miss M. Anderson, a neat-fitting brown holland with blue tie; Miss Churton. effective costume of black flowered delaine with deep ecru epaulettes and trimmings, pretty crinkley hat; Mrs Dennison, looking as juvenile as ever in a brown holland: Miss Lawford was similarly attired: Miss Percival, cornflower blue skirt, white b ouse, sailor hat; Miss Trimnell (Wellington), navy skirt and jacket white shirt front, gem; Miss Forbes looked piquan'e in Gobelin blue skirt, white blouse, gem hat; Miss Atkinson, becoming blue and white striped crinkley gown; her sister, dark skirt, blue blouse; Miss Ida Thorne-George, fawn and black check skirt, white shirt, large cream picture hat with canary-coloured trimmings : Miss Kissling, grey skirt, white blouse; Miss O’Neil, stylish black skirt and zouave, white blouse, black hat; Miss Hall, black skirt, light blouse; Miss Rookes, brown holland ; and many others I did not know. Amongst the gentlemen were Messrs Upfil, Ward, Dennison, Dargaville, Tempest, Hulme, Robison, Chalice, Stevenson. ON THE AUCKLAND LAWN Miss Nicholson wore a pretty blue gown, crinkley hat; the Misses Gorrie. dark skirts, light blouses; the Misses Hooper, white zephyrs; Mrs Chapman, navy skirt, white blouse. I have missed Miss E. Scherff lately amongst the players on this lawn. She was once foremost amidst the energetic ones. EDEN AND EPSOM LAWN. Miss Paton, black, and her sister, navy: Mrs McFarlana* Gobelin blue skirt, azure nil blouse; Miss E. Bull, navy skirt, light blouse; Miss Spiers looked well in white, becoming black lace hat with white flowers; Miss Hardie, navy skirt, white blouse ; Miss E. Hesketh, fawn ; Miss M. Hesketh, brown; Miss Thomson (Waiheke), brown skirt, white blouse, hat with floral trimmings ; Miss Ella Hall, navy skirt, blue blouse; Mrs Dawson, fawn. Quite a number of Auckland ladles have been spending the summer holidays away. Mrs C. Haines, Mrs L. D. Nathan and two daughters and son, Miss Davis, Mrs Myers, Misses Myers (two), have been staying at Whakarewarewa. STREET DRESSES. Mrs Buddle, of O’Rorke-street, is staying at the Lake, North Shore, for the summer months. An unusually quiet week has been spent in Onehunga. tennis being the only amusement. On Saturday there were very few visitors on the lawn, but quite enough players to keep sets going until dark. The afternoon tea, provided by Mrs Scott and Miss Brookfield, was done full justice to.
