Dear Bee, September 22. It has been such a pleasure to look forward to MR WALLACE’S CONCERTS every fortnight that we rather sadly wended our way to hear the last on Thursday. The pretty hall was filled in every part. Lady Glasgow’ was also present with Mr and Mrs Alex Boyle, and the performance was charmingly rendered. Mrs Westmacott wore black velvet with neck frill of gold embroidered silk, and Mrs Burns a black evening dress with bands of velvet on the skirt. Their duets w’ere most artistically sung. Lady Glasgow wore a very pale grey silk with white satin ribbons and revers, and some lovely diamonds ; Mrs Boyle, square-cut black evening dress and diamond ornaments; Mrs Julius, striped green and black silk trimmed with black lace, and crimson plush cloak ; her two daughters in salmon pink; Mrs Embling, black lace and satin; Mrs W. P. Reeves, in cream ; Miss Reeves, a costume of pale green and pink ; Mrs Denniston, a very pretty pink velvet cloak with w'hite fur trimming; Mrs Rhodes, black with handsome cream cloak embroidered with gold ; Miss Hutton, very pretty long white cloak with triple cape beaver - trimmed; Miss Fairhurst, brown velvet, gold passementerie vest, and small pink wreath in her hair; Captain and Mrs Garsia, Mr and Mrs Bennett. Mesdames Robison. Mathias. Harrison. Mr and Mrs Gilbert Anderson. Bishop Julius, Bishop Grimes, Judge Denniston. Mr and Mrs A. Anderson, the latter in terracotta and pale blue silk with handsome lace frills; Mrs J. Anderson, black prettily trimmed with jet; Mrs Milton. grey silk and some lovely Maltese lace ; Mrs Nelson, pale blue with rows of narrow’ black velvet in clusters ; Mrs Bat ham, black and lemon colour veiled with black lace; Mrs Meares, long white cloak trimmed with white fur; Mr and Mrs Barkas Mesdames Baber, Thompson. Chy no wet h. Waymouth ; Mrs Gibbs, in black and old gold; Mrs (Dr.) Jennings, rose-coloured silk, pretty white cloak with ripple cape : Mrs Kaye, electric blue silk, white cloak; Mr and Mrs West land. Mrs F. Graham, terracotta silk : Miss Graham, in cream: Mrs Carrick, black velvet ; Mr and Miss Bonnington, Mr and Mrs Beath, Mr and Mrs Wilding, Mrs Wallace, etc. At the Y.M.C.A. Rooms on Friday a very pleasing programme was charmingly performed by the members of THE CHRISTCHURCH LIEDERK RANZ( II EN from three to five, afternoon tea was included. Among those E resent were Mrs Julius (the recently-elected president), in navy lue dress trimmed with gold braid, bonnet to match ; Miss Julius. grey frock, black hat with grey and black velvet bows ; Mrs (Dr.) Jennings, brown cloth, and pretty toque trimmed with beaver; Mesdames M. Campbell. Robison, Meares, Gilbert. Adair, Trent, Hawkes, Symes, Allen, Hargreaves, Rouse, Graham, W. Ollivier, J. Aiken, Baber. Waymouth. Graham, Greenwood, Merton. Wilson, Misses M. Gard’ner, Beeves, Guinness, Meares. Benson, Heywood, Black, Gibson, Mesdames Robinson, Saunders, Gibson, and others. The Mayoral Ball on Tuesday was, I am told, a very enjoyable one, but as my part in the BIRTHDAY FESTIVITIES did not come till Wednesday, I feel I can tell you more about that. The Mayor, in robes of blue velvetand ermine, with three-cornered

hat trimmed with ermine, and Mrs George in white satin (Nine teenth Century) dress, received at the door their numerous and mystifying guests. By 9.30 the hall was one of the prettiest scenes anyone could witness, and as one gentleman remarked, ‘the best, variety troupe that had ever visited the Tuam street Theatre' were assembled. The opening quadrille was danced by the Mayor and the Hon Mrs E. W. Paiker. Sir Arthur Douglas and the Mayoress, Mr Acton Adams and Mrs Denniston, Mr Manning and Mrs Hulbert. The cost nines were without exception good, some very handsome, and mostly suiting the wearers admirably, ‘ Your future candidate ’ attracting everyone's attention. Thegcntleman was so thoroughly disguised I can only give his costume short black skirt just showing the black trousers, p nk and white striped blouse, white muslin cap with bright Howers, with a card fastened on his back showing what he thought of the late grant to women. Mrs Wilder, as Catherine Tudor, very handsome trained dress and cloak of greeny grey velvet with high pointed collar, high crowned velvet hat with pink feather : Mrs Boyle, a Watteau dressof lemon-coloured brocade; Lady Douglas looked well as Marie Antoinette: Mrs Lomax-Smith, Lady Mirza; Mrs Gibbs, luidy Sneerwell, in a handsome terracotta corded silk and white wig ; Mrs J. S. Guthrie looked exceedingly well as Mary Queen of Scots ; Mrs W. D. Meares, Marie Stuart ; Mr R. M. Macdonald, made a splendid Egyptian syce; Mrs Macdonald, a Soudanese lady; Mrs Pyne. Mr and Mrs Worthy contemplate a trip to England with their family at the end of the year. They will be much missed in Christchurch. Their frequent hospitalities have been freely partaken of, and much appreciated by a large circle of friends, and after a residence and labour amongst us of some twenty live years, the gap is not easily filled.
