HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, September 1. The Caledonian concert was A VERY GREAT SUCCESS, the hall being literally packed with all sorts and conditions of men, of course Scotchmen being the majority. Mr G. Swan contributed a good deal to the success of the evening by his excellent recitations. Messrs Wilkie and Peddie danced a Highland Fling, and Master A. Wilkie a sailor’s hornpipe. Mr W. P. Stuart as usual was much admired while dancing the Shauntreaus; Mr D. Ross danced the sword dance. One of the best items of the evening was the Reel of Tulloch by Messrs D. Ross, W. Fraser, and W. P. and J. L. Stuart. The orchestra was chiefly composed of local talent. The ladies who took part in the concert were the Misses Battle, Wyllie, and Mrs Heigh way, Messrs James, Muir. McEwan, and Collins also sang. Miss Kelly played most of the accompaniments in her usual finished style. DANCES. I hear that a gymnasium dance is to be held shortly, which from all accounts promises to be a very great success. I will tell you more about it after it has taken place. A Caledonian ball is also on the tapis, so that there is plenty of fun looming ahead. OUR PEOPLE. Mr and Mrs Donnelly have returned from the South. Mrs Donnelly looks very stylish in a black gown, pretty black hat with black feathers. Mrs (Captain) Russell and the Misses Russell are expected back from Wellington this week. Mrs J. N. Williams and the Misses Williams are also expected

back shortly.

Dolly.
