HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, September 3. The lant of the LADIES’ NIUHTS AT THE CVMNASH M was a decided success. Indeed, the large and fashionable audience were nobly entertained, and seeiue<l to think so. lam quite sorry these evenings are over, they have boon so enjoyable. Mr Chariton makes an admirable teacher, ami under his able tuition the young men arc visibly improving. Mr Cheer does his exercises very neatly as does Mr Wawn. What a jolly fellow he is. as Mr Hobbs truly said, ‘the life and soul of lite gymnasium.’ His singing of ‘ Ballyhooly ’ last evening was very amusing, and the get-up was immense. He was also very good as a clown. Mr Trickle bank again delighted us with his singing. He has a lovely tenor voice. His exercises with the chibs wore immensely admired again. He is certainly a ‘(lon' ut this pari of the business. I believe his performance is called an Indian club solo. Mr M< Ewan delighted everyone, first of all by his singing, and then by his very clever contortions. A very pretty trio was sung. ‘Come Where Mv Love Lies Dreaming,’by Messrs E. Roach, Tricklebank, and Wawn Mr Ridgeway also sang. At the conclusion of the entertainment the Rev. J. Hobbs addressed the audience, and congratulated the men upon the progress they had made. I believe a smoke concert is to be given shortly to the members, when affairs in general will be talked over. In connection with the Gymnasium I must mention that Miss Kelly has been very kind in playing the accompaniments and the marches for the men and boys. An entertainment is to come oil'shortly which I am sure WILL ATTRACT A CROWDED HOUSE. It is to take the form of tableaux and statuary. The Sunday schoolteachers are very busy coaching the children, who are all wild with delight, and anticipate a very good time. After the Caledonian concert Mr Stuart, presented Miss Kellv with an exceedingly pretty gold brooch as A MARK Ilf APPRECIATION for her services at the concert. Miss Kelly was very much surprised and pleased at so unexpected a gift, and expressed her thanks for the present. OUR PEOPLE. Mrs Lanauze has gone to Christchurch for a trip. Miss Seale has nearly recovered from the measles. Miss Amy Scale is quite herself again, ami looks very nice in navy blue gown trimmed with black velvet, black felt hat wit hears Mrs Russell has returned from Wellington, and is looking verv well. J Mrs Dougins McLean looks exceedingly stylish in black gown black jacket with jet wing, black hat with feathers Whilst walking LN NAPIER I not iced that Miss Rhodes looks well in an electric blue costume hat to match ; Miss Hamlin wears a stylish navy blue gown’ stnall hat; I saw Miss Laseelles in a stylish fawn jacket, black sailor hat. with blue band ; Miss Tipping, of Hastings, looked well in town in navy blue, pale blue shirt, black hat with feathers. | saw Mrs \ ickerman on the Parade in a very stylish jacket, navy with wings, small black hat. with yellow ears. Dolly.
