NAPIER.
Dear Bee, August 21. RUGBY UNION BALL. The ball of the year is over. Everything was perfection -music supper, partners, and the floor. It was a lovely moonlight night and the Garrison Hall was of course thronged, there being about hundred couples present. Ihe costumes were very handsome and varied. Several of the Napier Amateur Operatic Society appeared in their‘Rip Van Winkle ’ costumes, and lent additional interest to the scene. A number of Maoris graced the room with their presence, amongst them being Hiroa, our only representative in the New Zealand football team which lately visited Australia The hall was beautifully decorated, the floor being like a sheet of glass. The supper was in the hands of the ladies, and they excelled themselves. Ihe Committee were Mesdames Logan, Swan Jago P S. McLean Faulknor. J. C. McVay, and Hamlin, the Misses Cotterill, laylor, Rhodes, Jago. McVay, Peddie. and Newton. The stewards were Messrs Logan. P. Franklin H Swan, R. W. Percy, H. Gorman, J. Wilson, and Taranaki. ’ Mr Jack Hughes, as usual, made a most energetic secretary and helped largely to make the ball the success it w as. Some of those who wore fancy dress were Mrs King 17th Century Schoolgirl; Mrs Menzies. Boadicea; Miss Danvers, Gipsy Queen ; Mlss Sutton, Madam Japonica; Miss Lily Jensen, Red Riding Hood ; Miss Comford, who looked exceedingly nice as a Swiss Peasant Girl; Miss Heath, Highland Lassie; Miss Take Daughter of the Regiment; Miss Nicholson. Good Old Mother Shipton; Miss Hilda-Hitchings, Coinin’ Through the Rye* Miss Hitchings looked very ‘fetching’ as Katrina, a sweet little cos tume (heliotrope) flt.ting exquisitely; Miss Byatt. French Waiting Maid; Miss R. Foster, Girl Graduate; Miss Murrow Nancv Lee; Miss M. White, Slave Girl: Miss Rudman. Music; Miss Hall, Fishwife; Miss McVay, Watteau; Miss Beamish. Elsie Maynard; Miss K. Miller, Maid of Athens; Miss Davies Curds and Cream ; Miss Nellie Culshan. Nancy Lee ; Miss Jago. Manola ; Miss M. A. Hughes Bachelor. Cambridge University; Miss Marsden, trench Lady of the Fifteenth Century; Miss Farley Blake, Carmen. A number of ladies went in evening dress and some of the gowns worn were exceedingly handsome. Mrs Edmonds (Dunedin) wore a most exquisite pink brocaded silk gown trimmed with lovely ruby velvet. This was one of the handsomest gowns in the room. Mrs J. p. Hamlin looked very nice in a handsome black gown; Miss Hamlin a most becoming black gown with heliotrope sleeves, and sash’of heliotrope ; Miss Lascelles wore an exquisite heliotrope brocaded si!k; Mrs Herman, a lovely white silk, richly beaded front (she looked charming); Mrs Moeller, lovely black gown ; Mrs Baker black gown ; Miss Baker looked exceedingly w'ell in black with heliotrope sleeves; Miss Farquhar (Dunedin), very cAic white muslin, skirt made with tiny flounces to the waist, the upper part of the full sleeves were also frilled all over, and looked so light and pretty; Miss Dymock (Dunedin) looked very stylish* her hair was worn low, in an immense ‘bun ’; Mrs King made an’ ideal ‘ little girl.’
1 haven t time to toll you about, all the ladies costumes, so must hasten on and describe some of the men. Mr Minden Fenwicko really looked most, gorgeous ; he was an English Book-maker and looked one or the best, in the room ; Mr .1. A. Bailey Colonial Infantry ; Mr J. A. Muir Hospital Doctor; Mr A. J. Thompson. Swagger; Mr F. J Uipdoll. Tennis Player ; Mr It. Crosbie, laird Darnley ; Mr Baddeline. Minstrel Boy ; Mr tiny Cooper, lamdon Dude; Mr W. C. Miller. Highlander, Mr Arthur sidey Captain Rowley; Mr VV. Prentice. Taurekareka; Mr u G Warren, Lord Bambini; Mr Sydney Hoben. Toreador: Mr G 1 lusted. Jockey ; Mr Harold large, Another Generation ; Mr W A. Smith, Court. Dross; Mr IL D. Brewer. Figaro ; Mr J. Brans ■\ , S llor Johnstone, Naval ; Mr J. Edwards. Nigger • Mr I. Kessall. Man-o-warsman; Mr W. Fraser. Charles II- Mr F. Rolls Sailor; Mr 11. Dillon, Jockey; Mr L. M. Simpson. Sailor; Mr It. H. Mackenzie. Clown; Mr J. G. Hughes a voting Nelson. The Gisborne foot bailors attended the ball, and I hone enjoyed the evening. 1 missed the Misses Logan. Millie Rhodes and Shaw, they being all away in Christchurch. 1 did not notice many Hastings folk besides Miss Beamish and Messr- m..i- «...i Reid.
