BLENHEIM.

Dear Bee, February 28. The bad weather has put a stop to most festivities this week, but on Thursday a good many put in their appearance at MRS GRIFFITHS* AT HOME in spite of the chilly afternoon. I noticed present. Mesdames T. Redwood. Snodgrass, Robinson, Mclntosh, Howard, Earp, Orr, A. Farmar. Howard, Dodson. Dodd, Jackson, Misses Snodgrass, Martin, Redwood, F. Smith, B. Horton. Worthington, Dodson, L. Farmar, and Messrs Griffiths, (3) J. H. Smith. E. Conolly, Bunting, S. Hodson, etc. Most of the ladies were seasonably clad in warm serges. Miss Worthington, looked nice in a crimson frilled Russian blouse over navy serge skirt, seal plush coat with beaver, and white reefer hat; Mrs Howard, black serge skirt and whole black coat over dark red blouse, small sailor hat trimmed with cream and yellow marguerites and si k : Mrs Earp, navy serge coat and skirt, scarlet blouse, black hat; Miss Lilian Horne, grey corselet skirt and braces over cream blouse, cream hat; Miss Dodson, well-fitting grey tweed and white hat with feathers ; Mrs Urr. black, and becoming white hat with black velvet and feathers. Tennis was played most vigorously and the lawn was so sheltered that the wind was not felt. On Friday we had a very severe gale in the teeth of which Lord and Hopetoun, and Lord Northesk. accompanied by Mr. Beaumont. drove into Blenheim from Starborough. They stayed at the Criterion Hotel till Saturday morning when they left by tr-iin for Picton to join the Hinemoa, which had been dispatched from Wellington to meet them. It was a pity that they too should see our small town under such disadvantageous circumstances. The gale blew down and uprooted a great many trees all about the town, and broke a few windows, besides doing g r eat damage among Messrs Dodson’s hop vines. Fortunately, nearly all the harvest is gathered in, but loud are the lamentations of those unfortunates who still have some corn in the fields. Saturday afternoon was too wet for the tennis, so those ladies who had prepared tea had to eat up their cakes, etc., themselves. CITY RIFLES’ SOCIAL. To-night the Blenheim City Rifles meet .at Captain Griffiths’ for their yearly social which has already been postponed three times on account of the rain, but we hope the weather will be more propitious to-night. Sincerity.
