HERE-VITH is given the photosot the Canterbury football team, of whose ‘deeds of daring do,’as they sing in the * Yeomen, we are all, alas, toour sorrow, well ae>; tainted. There are none, however, who grudge Canterbury their well earned victories. They were won by splendid p’ay. and when beaten they were not disgraced. The team were jolly good fellows ail, and gentlemen. Most heartily we congratulate them, and wish Canterbury anepually good team next time they go on tour. Then some of us mean to beat them. Hawke s Bay athletics may thank their stars for ruling them to play in a district where liberal donors a'wtti As the annual meeting of the Hawke s Bay County Cricket Club, Captain Russell’s Challenge Cup was presented to tie club. Mr E. H. Williams’ presentation bat for the best average scorer became the property of Mr Fitzhill, and the silver cup, ottered by Mr E. Tanner at the opening of the season for the player who should contribute most prominently to the success of the club, was voted to Mr Arthur Gore. Mr E. H Williams also offers another bat for the meet consistent batsman in ten innings to be played next season. The following officers were elected : President, the Hon Captain Russell, M. H.R. : vice-presidents, Messrs J. N. Williams, Heathcote Williams, A. McHardy, T. H. Lowry and C. A. Fitzroy : secretary. Mr E. R. Viekermau : general committee, Messrs Charles Loughnan, Aliek Williams, T. W. Lewis, and J. Dove : captain, Mr T. H. Lowry: delegates to the association, Messrs E. H. Williams, and A. Gore.

Another of the series of six days events promoted by Mr Frank Hall at the Central Hail, Hol born. was brought to a conclusion the night before the Frisco mail left, the go asyou please fraternity being the latest section catered for. Soon after eleven o'clock on the previous Monday morning, thirty one competitors for prizes amounting to £l2O were dispatched on their weary wobble of seventy two hours twelve per day >, the best known of the crowd being George Mason, old Jre Spencer, George Pettit;, James Ray, and Baker, ‘of America.’ A track measuring fifteen laps to the mile, composed of the usual ingre-iients of tan bark and sawdust, had been laid out, and afforded good going. T. Gowan quickly found his way to the front, and by dint of sticking to his task in a determined manner covered 30 miles and 12 laps in the first twelve hours, finishing the day with a lead of 10 miles and 11 laps. »n Wednesday morning he held a lead of nearly 19 miles, bit, falling sick soon afterwards, only added, under great difficulties, a few miles to his score, and was passed by Mason and Pettitt, *.»□ Thursday morning only five competitors who had fulfilled the conditions by covering 165 miles in the previous three days, were left in, Gowan, however, joining issue, although objected to by the others- Gowan put in a smart performance, and quickly made up his ground, his running being the feature of the show. Pettitt led with a score of 249 miles 1 lap at the end of the fourth section forty eight hours , J. Kitson, of Poplar, being second with 223 miles 6 laps : Whale third. Mason fourth, and Gowan fifth, with 225 miles 7 laps to his credit. Resuming this Saturday morninz, it was found that Gowan had ren into fourth position, the score when the final twelve hours portion commenced being : Pettitt, 310 miles 2 laps : Kitson, 2:4 miles 5 laps : Whale, 231 miles 5 laps : Gowan, 277 miles 7 laps : Mason, 272 miles 2 laps : Lay, 270 miles 1 lap : and Slater, 257 miles 6 laps. Except that Slater passed Lay and Mason, no alterations took place in the relative positions daring the day, the final scores reading:—Pettitt, 357 miles 4 laps; Kitson, 332 miles 5 laps : Whale, 323 miles 5 laps : Gowan, 514 miles : Slater, 302 miles: Lay, 295 miles: Mason, 279 miles.
