As I was walking softly up the gravel path, whom should I see upon the verandah but her father, with a bloodthirsty-looking bull-dog squatting by his side. “ Come right along, young man," said the old gent ; “ this dog will not harm a hair of your head. ” Bilgus : ‘ Well, did he ?’ Hapgood ‘ No, he didn t harm my hair, but he took a two-inch slice of flesh ofl" the calf of my right leg.’
