GOVERNMENT HOUSE, WELLINGTON.

LADY GLASGOW’S AFTERNOON ‘AT HOME. THE sun has been out of town for the greater part of the week, andon Thursday last the rain descended in torrents, especially about half-past three, when everyone was thinking of starting for Government House. In consequence, the gathering was not so large as it would have been. The Countess received in a trained robe of grey satin figured with black velvet lozenges, a narrow trimming of black running round the skirt. Lord Glasgow was moving about the rooms, as were also his son and the aides-de-camp. Ladies Augusta, Alice, and Dorothy wore Gobelin cashmere dresses trimmed with velvet of the same colour, and their little brothers wore red and white striped football jerseys. Miss Hallowes was in a navy serge dress and jacket with crimson blouse, and Miss Sutcliffe wore a braided fawn tweed. Tea, coffee and wine were served as usual in the dining-room, where maids in white caps and aprons assisted the men servants to dispense the refreshments. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs J. E. Johnston in leaf green cloth wi h vest and cult’s of light green Pompadour satin; Mrs Kettle (Wanganui), in dark red figured with black jet trimmings and black and red stringless bonnet; Mr and Mrs James Mills (Dunedin), the latter in black brocade and velvet; Mrs Reynolds (Dunt din), in black brocade with velvet dolman ; Miss Reynolds, in dark green trimmed with black, large black feather trimmed hat; Mi and Mrs Riley, the latter in a navy dress, and jacket with white and gold front; Mrs Friend, in handsome fancy brown tweed, large black hat; Miss Fairchild, in red and brown figured tweed, grey caic; Miss Grant, brown tweed and hat, with pink blouse; Mrs Grace, in plush mantle to the edge of her dress, black velvet bonnet; Miss Grace, in light fawn tweed, and black Watteau jacket ; Miss M. Grace, navy dress and jacket with blue figured blouse; Dr. and Mrs Adams, the latter in light grey silk, trimmed with grey beaded edging ; Miss Dramfield in black dress and jacket with yellow blouse ; Miss Medley, navy trained dress, with navy spotted blouse and white straw hat ; Miss Bulle . in black; Mr and Mrs Harcourt, the latter in black ; Mrs Rose in black velvet; Miss N. Rose, in dark green, with black and pink hat ; Mr and Miss S. Graham, the latter in tweed dress and jacket, small brown felt hat; Mr and Mrs N. Reid; Miss Reid, in light fawn tweed trimmed with black velvet, large black hat ; Miss Quick, in lavender covered with black lace and Russian net: Captain, Mrs, and Miss Johnston, the latter in a green figured dress, with green sleeves covered with black luce, hat trimmed with green ; Mrs W. Johnston, in black dress and bonnet with pink trimmings ; Mr and Mrs Maxwell, the latter in black with jet trimmings ; Miss 1. Cooper, in light checked tweed, with large black hat: Miss Neville (Dunedin) in dark red tweed; Miss L. Haise, neat fawn tweed with brown velvet sleeves and front; Dr. and Mrs Gillon, the latter in a dark dress with neat black jacket and small black and red bonnet: Miss Borlase (Wanganui) in dark tweed trimmed with black braiding, small black and red bonnet; Mr and Miss Gurr, the lat ter wearing light fawn tweed with dark hat and tur boa; Mr and Mrs Baker, the latter wearing green silk, trimmed with a pretty fancy striped silk in the same colour. In the drawing-room there was an excellent idea with regard to the Hoor lamps. 'i he bowl and shade had been taken away, and in the brass cup which remained had been placed a pot plant.
