A LIBERAL TRANSLATION.
Many years ago, while some excavations were going on near an ancient church in the northern part of Ireland, a large stone was uncovered bearing a queer inscription in J.atin. The church had been dedicated to a saint and missionary known by the simple name of Nucatus Arubulans. The inscription was as follows : • I Sabilli Hteres ago. Fortibus es im. Aro N'osces Mari the be trux Votis innem. * ’ pes an dux.’ Some wit who saw the stone observed that though not versed in antiquarian lore, he could give a translation. In sound it is ridiculously like the Latin words. ■ I say, Billy, here's a go : Forty 'busses in a row. No, says Mary: they be trucks. What is in 'em I Pease and ducks!'
