PRESENCE OF MIND.

Presence of mind is an excellent quality, but not many would have the presence of mind of the soldier of whom this story is told. During a long and arduous siege water became scarce and difficult to get, and one day this soldier, making a lucky find, attempted to gain some advantage from his good fortune. He carried a couple of buckets of water through the camp crying : ‘ Fresh water ! fresh water ! threepence a bucket 1’ Just at this point a rifle ball came whistling through the air. It carried away the fingers of one hand. The bucket it held fell to the ground, and the water was spilled. But unwilling to lose his profit, without an instant’s pause the water-bearer cried out, * Fresh water ! fresh water 1 sixpence a bucket!’ „
