Commencing his public career as an explorer in Western Australia he subsequently administered the affairs of South Australia, New Zealand and Cape Colony at the most critical periods in the history of these colonies. There were then neither cables nor steam mail-services to keep the Governor in touch with the Imperial authorities, and he had to rely entirely upon his own judgment and resources. It was under these circumstances that Sir George Grey had successively to cope with financial disasterin South Australia, native insurrection in New Zealand and Kaffir disturbances at Cape Colony. The authors have had exceptional opportunities for gathering the facts of Sir George Grey’s remarkable career. Intimate personal communication with the ex-Governor and statesman has enabled them to set out his remarkable figure in bold relief, and they have been able by direct reference to ascertain the inner history of many events of great historical importance, and to collect a large fund’ of interesting personal reminiscences.
