AN ANXIOUS WIFE.
* Is this the headquarters of the Red Men ?’ she asked buist ing in the door.
‘ This is the office of one of the lodges,’ replied the man at the desk.
‘ Well, I’m the wife of John Brown, and he’s a member,’ said the woman, ‘ and I want to know if he’s a member.’ ‘ Yes, madam, we have a member by that name.’ ‘ Full member ?’ ‘ Well, yes, he’s taken every degree.’ ‘ That’s what I’m after ! He’s taken ’em all, has he ?’ * Yes, I think he has.’ ‘ How many degrees are there ?’ ‘ Well, there are the adoption, the—’ ‘ Never mind. There ain’t more than forty or fifty, are there ?’ • Why, no ; nowhere near so many.’ ‘ Weil, that settles it. My husband’s been trying to fool me.’ ‘ How, madam ?’
‘ Just this way. He’s been taking Red Men’s degrees, he says, ever since the first of January. Been out all night till three in the morning about sixty times, and every time I ask him where he’s been he has the same old story about taking a degree. Says there’s only about thirty more, and that he'll have ’em ail over before another month. Sure you’ve told me the truth, now?’ * Why, of course, madam.’ ‘ H’m ! All right 1 Much obliged ! I’m going home now to wait for him, and if he turns up with any story of taking the ninety-ninth degree or the hundred-and-second, I’ll show him ! I’ll put him through such a course of sprouts he'll think he's taking about 11,000 all together ! Good-day, sir 1’
