HAWKE’S BAY AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
THE LEAPING MATCH. HE Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Show is one of the biggest things of its kind held in New Zealand, and those connected *with the institution and the public always take an interest in the annual leaping and jumping matches. Our artist has taken
some admirable sketches of this year’s contests, and the reader is given a fair idea of the difficult obstacles to be negotiated by the competitors. Mr E. B. Tanner’s Alnra was successful in carrying off the prize for
the high jump, with Toni Tit second. After the contest, the owner of Tom Tit greatly amused the spectators by jumping over fences, and then calling his horse to follow him, which it did without any trouble. In the leaping match Alma also took part, but he was defeated. The winner of the first prize was Mr J. H. Williams’ grey gelding Kelpie (ridden by Mr Collie), but the honour of
second place was the cause of a hot and exciting struggle between Mr Tanner’s Alma (with Mr Gilpin in the saddle) and Mr Wotton’s Tom Tit (ridden by his owner), in which the former had the good fortune to pull off the prize. Each riders weight was list., and the prizes were £5, £3, and £2. There were in all seventeen entries for the leaping competition, and the exhibition of jumping was splendid. Our artist has also given us an illustration of Mr W. T. Williams’
Satellite, who gained the first prize for lady’s hacks. Satellite’s conformation was favourably commented on by those present at the show.
