ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CHALLENGE SHIELD.

The trophy which takes the form of a shield, stands about twofeet high, and is composed of sterling silver, fixed on to a ground work of polished walnut. Across the top is a ribbon bearing the words Association Football Challenge Trophy, and around the sides are two sprays of thistle leaves and thistles which take the place of the time-honoured laurel leaves. In the centre is placed an embossed representation of the coat of arms of the Brown’s Society of Glasgow, with the characters raised in gold, and underneath a ribbon bearing the motto ‘ Floreat Majestas. ’ The inscription, which is placed on the top of the main plate, is as follows: —‘ Presented by Robert Brown, Scotch whisky merchant, of Glasgow.’ There are a number of smaller shields placed for the names of the victorious teams from time to time as the trophy is competed for. The total weight of silver is about 50 ounces 925 fine. The manufacturers are Messrs A. R. Hislop and N. W. Bell, of Wellington. The shield is to be competed for throughout the colony annually, and is a splendid sample of the silversmith’s art. It lias been presented to the association footballers by John Brown, the Australian representative for Brown’s four crown whisky, who is himself a great associa tion football player. The photographers are Price and Co., Wellington.
