But at the time he should return home the rain came down in torrents, and mamma was in terrible anxiety as to the drenching her son would have ; but telephones are plentiful and cabs arecheap in Berlin, so she telephoned to her friend to give the boy the sixpence for a cab (50 pfennig), and to her joy she was in time ; her friend soon answered back that she had got a cab and sent him off, and in less than half an hour he came rushing up the stairs, but drenched to the skin and streaming with water. • But,’ cried mamma, ‘ they said you were sent in a cab?’ ‘ Oh, yes, ma. But when I ride with you, you always make me get inside ; this time I rode on the box.’
