Support of the paper is earnestly requested. It is not a commercial speculation. No one is _ getting paid for its production but the printer, and out of an earnest desire to place the grievances, desires, and aspirations of the Maori people before their European fellowsubjects, some Maori ladies combined to ensure sufficient capital for supplying subscribers for a year without disappointment. The future lies with the public, and depends upon their support. The Editor will feel obliged if those possessing clippings from newspapers, new or old, on Maori subjects, will forward them for publication if suitable. Many items of interest are in danger of being lost if not thus rescued from fugitive print. A desire having been expressed that the names of the native ladies whose benevolence made possible the initiation and publication of the Maori Record for the first year should be published, it affords us much pleasure in giving them in this issue. They are:—■ RANGI topeora, KUINI WI RANGIPUPU, WIKITORI A TAITOKO, All of the West Coast.

EDITOR’S EXPLANATION. In regard to the above, generous donations of three Maori ladies, in justice to himself the Editor wishes to explain that they have contributed nothing towards the production of the Maori Record. The production of the paper, he takes it, is an accomplished fact when the literary matter for it is complete. What the benefactors of their race have contributed towards is, the reproduction of the paper by printing for publication purposes. Neither by subsidy, donations, subscription, or circulation, has any money been paid for the literary production of the Record.
