Business Conducted at Meeting of Nurses' and Midwives' Registration Board
The Nurses' and Midwives' Registration Board held a meeting on Wednesday, 19th June. One matter receiving lengthy consideration was the teaching apparatus which should be m the institutions approved as training schools for midwives and maternity nurses, and it was decided that the minimum equipment required as follows : — Female pelvis, natural, without femur bones with ligaments. Foetal skull. 2. Paper mache foetal heads or plaster casts to be used instead of the foetal skull when learning mechanism of labour. One set of obstetrical diagrams. It was also considered that it would be of great advantage if the undermentioned items were obtained, but on account of the expense it was thought that it should be left with the various Boards controlling the institutions as to whether they were procured or not : — Obstetric Phantom- Schulze's (leather covered) with foetal doll and set of metal fittings for gynacological operation purposes. Complete on movable stand. (Metal fittings probably not necessary). For larger teaching hospitals it is suggested that they should be supplied with a Balopticon. The Whakatane Public Hospital, the Opotiki Public Hospital and the Tauranga Public Hospital were all approved as " limited " training schools for nurses.
These are the first hospitals which have applied to be approved as '* limited " training schools by the Board. By virtue of this approval the probationers at this hospital are enabled to undergo twelve months' training, and for this twelve months to count as six months towards the three years' training required. The undermentioned persons were appointed examiners under the Nurses' and Midwives' Registration Act. 1925 : — Miss J. W'augh. R.N., Sister m Charge, Milton Hospital. Miss A. C. Fraser, R.X., Rawhiti Private Hospital, Dannevirke. Miss E. J. Lloyd. R.N., Matron. Hospital, Hokitika. Dr. C. C. Maclaurin, 14 Queen Street. Dannevirke. There was also considerable discussion concerning the position regarding general trained nurses who have undergone a special course m Ray Therapy. The Masseurs' Registration Act prohibits anyone undertaking this work except a registered masseur or masseuse, and it was the opinion of the Nurses' and Midwives' Registration Board that this Act should be amended to allow any medical practitioner or qualified nurse who has gone through a recognised qualifying course m heliotherapy to legally practice and advertise the fact. It was decided that a copy of this opinion should be forwarded to the Honourable the Minister.
