Nurses' Memorial Fund

It may be remembered that when, after the war, the fund to commemorate those New Zealand nurses who lost their lives on service was first inaugurated, the Government of the day subsidised to the extent of pound for pound the annuities granted to nurses and midwives who .were unable from sickness or old age to maintain themselves. This concession, however, did not last very long. Retrenchment was drastically enforced m all Government Departments, and the subsidies granted cut down. For years, therefore, the Fund has missed this great aid, and from time to time efforts have .been made to recover it. We are glad now to announced that the Government now m office has agreed to

allow 10/- subsidy on all disbursements of the Fund, whether as annuities or special temporary grants. This will add .greatly to the usefulness of the Fund and allow it to help more nurses who are m need. At the Matrons* Conference, the Hon. Misister of Health made the announcement of this decision, which was received with applause. A nurses' effort lately was made at Thames Hospital to help the fund. The whole nursing staff agreed, instead of giving each sister Christmas presents as usual, to devote the money to the Memorial Fund, and send a nice cheque to the treasurer.
