For Armistice Day
S. M. Mac Donald
On city's thronging way, On veldt and prairie, Let every heart to-day Keep sanctuary! To the unvanquished Due honour giving, The well-remembered dead And those yet living! Silence each striving tongue ! Set the bells pealing! Ah! they whose hearts are wrung Can find no healing! Hush every clamour rude For meditation; This, of our gratitude, Commemoration. Let the throng onward go, Busy and bustling, — But, m still places, lo! A soft wind rustling,
Breathes rest and peace to all Whose hearts are breaking, — Breathes, low and sweet, the call To new life waking. Rise to the tasks ahead, — Wrongs to be righted! To the triumphant dead Our word is plighted! Let a new faith begin, Broader and deeper; Whate'er our brother's sin, We are his keeper! When great and wise men meet, With Love's good omen, When brave and true men greet The erstwhile foemen As brave and true as they, — Leave the sword rusting! Pass gladly on our way, Loving and trusting!
