New Zealand Trained Nurses' Association

Annual Report

The number of members on the register as at August 31st, 1926, is 1,320, as compared with 1,294 the previous year. Of these 105 are life members. New Branch. A new branch has been formed m Southland with a membership to begin with of 58, and a Nurses' Bureau has been formed m Invercargill. Death of Mrs. Grace Neill. We regret to record the death of Mrs. Grace Neill, who was one of the pioneers m the nursing world of this Dominion, and who helped to form the International Council of Nurses m 1898. Deep sympathy is extended to Mrs. Neill's relations and friends. Diploma of Nursing and Post-Graduate Course for Nurses. The post-graduate course for nurses and the Diploma of Nursing has, unfortunately, not been established. Through some misunderstanding, the Otago University repudiates any responsibility for the payment of salary to the lecturers for this course. Rather than allow the scheme to fall through the Otago Branch of the N.Z.T.N.A. has offered to pay half of one lecturer's salary for the first year if the Government will subsidise this amount. It is hoped that a satisfactory settlement will soon be reached. Appointments on Standing Committees of International Council of Nurses. We have to report that the following members of the N.Z. Trained Nurses' Association were elected to serve on Standing Committees of the International Council of Nurses: — Miss Bicknell, Wellington (Education Committee) ; Miss Pattrick, Otago (Public Health Nursing Committee) ; Miss Hood, Canterbury (Private Duty, Nursing Committee). Miss Maclean, Editor of "Kai Tiaki," was invited by the International Council of Nurses to act on the Publication Committee, of whom there are five members, one each for Europe, Asia, America, Africa, and Australasia.

Nurses and Midwives' Registration Board.

Misses Kohn and Inglis were appointed to act on the Nurses and Midwives' Registration Board, having been nominated by the N.Z. Trained Nurses' Association at the last meeting of Central Council. The Board has met several times since the beginning of the year, and much business was dealt with m connection with the recognition of different training schools for maternity nurses and for midwives. It is intended that the training of midwives shall be carried out m only a few of the best equipped maternity hospitals, for the training of maternity nurses a larger field is allowed. New books on medical and surgical nursing have been approved to the various training schools and an improved course on invalid cookery has been recommended. "Kai Tiaki/' the Nurses' Journal. The sub-committee appointed to go into the matter of the cost of publishing "Kai Tiaki" called for tenders from various firms. After thorough investigation of the different offers it was decided to accept that of the Tolan Printing Co. It will be satisfactory to members to learn that the net cost to the Association for the last two quarters was approximately £82, which is practically the same as for only one quarter (July issue) last year. Subscribers to the Nurses' Journal are still dilatory m forwarding their subscriptions, so our financial position is still unsatisfactory though since the change m publishing arrangements it has much improved. It is suggested that m future the subscription should be at a higher rate to all those who do not pay within a certain time. The Carillon Memorial. Last June, Miss Bicknell, Director of Nursing, called a meeting of representative nurses m Wellington and proposed that nurses m New Zealand should be asked to subscribe to provid-

ing a bell m the Carillon which is to be erected m Wellington m memory of those who fell m the war. There was very hearty response to this proposal, and m a very short time over £130 was received. This bell will be rung on the date of the sinking of the "Marquette" when many of our nurses made the supreme sacrifice. Thanks. Our special thanks are extended to Miss Todd, Hon. Secretary, Wellington Branch, who has done much invaluable

routine work m connection with distributing the Nurses' Journal and keeping records of subscriptions paid. Subscriptions are frequently sent incorrectly, and as this entails both unnecessary work and expense, members were notified that any money sent m excess of what was due would be paid into the Nurses' Memorial Fund. R. MACDONALD, President. H. C. INGLIS, Hon. General Secretary.
