State Examinations

The biennial examinations of midwives took place on sth and 6th of December, 1923. There were 83 candidates, of whom 35 were already registered nurses. Seventy-nine candidates passed, three passed partially, and one failed altogether. The questions and the list of passes follows. The latter shows a hign percentage of marks for the majority. What are the chief sources of post-partum infection of the uterus? Describe in detail how you would prepare your hands before conducting delivery. -A. Name and describe the two common types of asphyxia in the newly-born child, and your treatment in each case. 5. How would you treat a case of threatened abortion? How would you tell when the abortion had become inevitable? C. Give the signs, symptoms and treatment of a case of eclampsia. Are primigravidse or multiparse more liable to this disease?

An urgent appendicectomy has to be performed in a private house. Describe your preparation of (a) the room, (b) the patient, and (c) the preparations you would make for the surgeon. Name five antiseptics, stating the strengths in which they are used. You are theatre sister in hospital. What instruments, etc., would you put out for an operation on a case of empyema? Define the following terms: (a) Sinus, (b) fistula, (c) colostomy, (d) gangrene, (e) septicaemia.
