CANTERBURY BRANCH.

A very enjoyable afternoon was given by Mrs. C. C. Davis, at her residence "Ferndale," River Road to the members of the Association. Many of the Doctors and their wives were present, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the outing. Such gatherings are a great relief to the tired nurse, who spends the best part of her life amongst sickness, and would be given more frequently by those possessing nice homes and grounds, if they only realised the pleasure it gave to others. A lecture was given by Doctor Douglas Anderson, on April 27th, in the Y.M.C.A. building, on the " Progress of Medicine and Surgery. " The subject was most interesting, showing how primitive some of the methods were, and what advance has been made in recent years in both branches. Doctor Neil Guthrie gave a most instructive lecture on X-Ray and Radium Treatment, especially in dealing with the alimentary canal. Several slides were shown, thereby demonstrating the subject more clearly, and showing how valuable the X-Ray is in diagnosis and treatment, A vote of thanks was passed to the Doctor and the hope expressed that he would resume the lecture at some future time. Professor Wall gave a very nice address on " Alpine Climbing/' and in imagina-

tion took us on some of his fine trips, without the discomfort and fatigue, which must have been incurred in getting there. All were made light of by the Professor, in the joy of adding- rare species to his already fine collection in the Christchurch

Museum. The lectures have been well attended on the whole, and show a marked improvement in attendance and interest, which is most encouraging, especially to those who give up their time to address the nurses.
