The Midwife— Past and Present

Midwifery holds the proud position of being the oldest profession for women. The first mention of the subject m the Bible is the touching story m Exodus i, 16-20, where we read that Shiphrah and Puah, " feared God and did not do as the King of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive . . . Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: ,and the people multiplied and waxed very mighty. " They were evidently a factor even m those early days m promoting the welfare of the people. Perhaps if the midwife of modern days were dealt with more generously the prosperity of our people might' be increased. The passage would make an excellent text for addresses to women.
