The many friends of Miss Ellen Dougherty will be grieved to hear of her death on November 3rd, ao the residence of her niece, Mrs. Hornsby, of Carterfcon. Trained at Wellington Hospital, Miss Dougherty for fifteen years (1893-1908) held the position of matron of the Palmerston North Hospital. She was a greatly esteemed member of the nursing profession, and her kind, motherly guardianship of the many young nurses trained under her will long be remembered.

It is w T ith the deepest regret we record the death of Miss Mabel Mander, Matron of Ashburton Hospital, on Wednesday Sep-

tember — , after great suffering due to a femoral embolism.

The acting-matron wrote : " Her death was the most pathetic, upsetting, and saddest I have witnessed. She had prayers at the bedside, and her bed was strewn with flowers ; hymns were sung, and the communion service held, and a hymn she specially wished sung when she was dying. She was conscious almost to the last, and said ' farewell.' When all was over the Hospital flag was flown at half-mast.

" The funeral took place on Friday afternoon. Besides her own relatives, the medical superintendent and eight of the nursing staff m uniform, members of the Hospital Board, and some of the domestic staff attending after a service at the hospital. Miss Mander was trained at the Dunedin Hospital, and was for some time District nurse at Palmerston North, and matron at Waimate Hospital for seven years. She was a nurse of high ideals and much esteemed, and will be much missed m the nursing world.
