Marriages and Engagements
A supper party was given by the nurses at St. Helens Hospital, Christchurch, on the occasion of the wedding of Staff-Nurse Ma y Smart with Mr. J. H. Stringer, of Christchurch. The dining-room was prettily decorated, and several old nurses were present. During the evening a cake stand was presented to her, and altogether a pleasant evening was spent.
Sister A. C. M'Bean, late of Hawera Hospital, who went Home and joined the Queen Alexandra's 1.M.N.5.R., was married on February 2nd in Tilstock Church, Salop, England, to Lieutenant E. D. Blackwood, Royal Engineers.
Sister Winnifred Wilson was married on 14th December at Melrose, Brighton, England, to Lieutenant Low, N.Z.M.C. She will shortly be returning to New Zealand.
On December 31st, at St. Bride's Church, Mauku, by the Rev. J. Fussell, Charles Woodward Horrell (Staff-Sergeant Major N.Z.D.C), second son of the late John Horrell, F.R.C.S., of Coromandel, to Elizabeth Sands, eldest daughter of William Sands, Waiuku. Mrs. Horrell was recently a sister in Napier Hospital for two and a half years. Her future home is to be in Coromandel.
Sister Ada Earl, of Avondale Mental and Hamilton General Hospitals, also St. Helens, Christchurch, was married while on active service, to Lieutenant Fagan. The marriage took place just before leaving on transport. Mrs. Fagan has now retired from the service, and is living in Auckland.
Miss Esperanza Nelson, Q.A.1.M.N.5., was married on October 7th to Captain T. Pryor, R.E., at Bombay. She gained the R.R.c! for her work in Mesopotamia, and was also mentioned in despatches. Trained in Sydney, N.S.W., and at the David Lewis Northern Hospital, Liverpool, Miss Nelson was working as assistant matron at Christchurch, N.Z., when Avar broke out, and she immediately offered her services.
Nurse Lylie Gair, of the Wellington Hospital, was married on 28th January to Lieutenant Moore, of Christchurch.
Nurse Belle Luke, late of Wellington Hospital, left for England in December. She expects to be away for six months, and on return will be married. She was acting as matron of the Sydney St. Emergency Hospital in the recent epidemic prior to her resignation.
Nurse Smart has resigned her position of staff -nurse at St. Helens Hospital on account of approaching marriage.
