New Zealand Nurses Memorial Fund
To the Editor. " Sir,— ln your paper to-day b Peter Pan ' has done well m calling attention to the noble, patriotic, and efficient work already done by our nurses on active service. Up to the present no less than twelve have lost their lives for their country. It is fitting that to these and others who may lose their lives that a suitable memorial should be raised, and a memorial which will be of lasting benefit to the nursing professior. ' Peter Pan, ' may rest assured that the nurses have not been and will not be forgotten. Already m Dunedin an influential committee has been formed, and, under the patronage of Her Excellency the Countess of Liverpool, a fund, with the above title, has been started. The main object of this fund is to be the relief of trained nurses m distress, occasioned by sickness, old age, accident or other calamity. Thus its benefit are not to be confined to the nurses who
lose their health in this war, most of whom will be entitled to a pension from the Government. Such a fund, the income only from which will be used, will be a practical (might almost be called " living ") memorial for all time and for all parts of New Zealand wheresoever needed. The Dimedin committee has asked that each large centre for its own committee. The committee for this provincial district, so far, consists of Lady Stout, Mrs. H. C. Lowry, Miss Maclean, his Worship the Mayor, Messrs. Wm. Ferguson, A. E. Pearce, W. F. Bethune, L. Tripp, Drs. Harty, Hardwicke Smith, and Young. This committee will shortly meet to consider ways and means. The first subscription promised me is £100 from Mrs. Lowry. For w ' Peter Pan's " benefit I enclose herewith the printed circular issued by the Dunedin committee-. I have little doubt but that you, sir, will be pleased to receive subscriptions to the above fund.— I am, etc. W. YOUNG. 30th December.
