Obituary

C. A. Holgate

We regret to learn of the death m England of Miss Lilian Heath, who was the first trained Matron of Masterton Hospital, and who afterwards, until she went to England, conducted a private hospital m Masterton. * * * * * * It is with the deepest regret that we record the death of Miss Inez Pownall, Matron of the Rotorua Government Sanatorium and Cottage Hospital. Miss Pownall was trained at the Thames Hospital and qualified m December 1004, was afterwards sister at the Gisborne Hospital and m 1908 was appointed matron of the Rotorua Sanatorium, the Cottage Hospital being an addition opened about two years ago. Her short term of nursing work, carried out always with devotion and enthusiasm, was terminated very sadly by a very severe attack of typhoid fever, during which her suffering was very great. On Septem-

ber 13th her sister, Miss Mabel Pownall from Otaki, was with her for a fortnight before her death. She was interred at Rotorua, a very quiet funeral followed by the medical staff and her nurses who, together with her many friends, deeply regret her untimely loss. Miss Pownall had many friends outside ("he profession of nursing as well as within, and her bright personality will be much missed. ;J: $ * * >;; * At the Hamilton Hospital, from enteric fever, the death occurred on August 4th of Nurse Mary Hudson, aged 32 years. Nurse Hudson had just completed her term of 3 years' training and had sat for her State examination, the result of which was announced on August Ist. She had passed well, and her early death is a great loss to the nursing profession. Her certificate and nurse's badge were sent to her sister. Deep sympathy is felt with her family m their sad loss.
