In response to a request by some of the Hospital Boards, the Inspector-General has drawn up a scale of salaries for the nursing staffs of hospitals of various capacity. It was not found possible to lay down a uniform scale of salaries, varying as the hospitals do m so many ways, and the scale is merely an indication of what the Department considers a fair recompense, taking into account the fact that hospitals are largely charitable institutions and not m any way self-supporting or worked at a profit, also taking into account the earning capacity of nurses outside institutions. This new scale compares very favourably with one recently published m the London Times for the institutions under the Metropolitan Asylums Board, which is appended : PROPOSED INCREASE OF HOSPITAL PAY. In consequence of the unprecedented difficulty experienced m obtaining sufficient ordinary nurses for the infectious hospitals of the Metropolitan Asylums Board, the principal medical officer of that body was instructed last November to report on the existing terms and conditions of employment of the nursing staff at the hospitals and to embody any views he might have as to what variations were necessary to render the service more attractive. The report, together with one prepared by a sub - c ommittee , was pre - sented to the Board at its meeting on Satuiday, and notice of motion on the matter was given. The dearth of nurses is, the committee state, a very serious matter for the Board, and they strongly emphasise the importance

of promptly taking all possible steps to meet the difficulty. Dr. Cuff, principal medical officer, recommends that measures having the following objects m view ought to be taken : — (a) To open the door more widely to applicants ; (b) to seek other sources of supply ; and (c) to render the service more attractive. He recommends, and the committee agree, that the minimum age limit of probationer candidates should be lowered from 21 to 19 and from 23 to 21 m the case of staff nurses. The committee submits the following revised rate of pay at the acute hospitals : Office. Present Salary. Proposed Salary Sister . . £38— £2— £44 £40— £3— £46

Staff Nurse (a) £30— £1— £34 (b) £26— £2— £30 £30— £3— £36 £30— £1— £32 Probationer £18— £2— £20 £20— £2— £22 Assistant Nurse (Cl. II.) £20— £2— £22 £20— £2— £22 They also recommend increases varying from £2 to £4 per annum m the pay of nurses m the convalescent hospitals, and the doubling of the minimum pay probationers at the children's hospit?ls. Another proposed change which is likely to be greatly appreciated is that all nurses on day duty be granted another whole day's leave m each month, and that all nurses on night duty be granted one more night off duty m each month.
