The Midwives' Act
There have been gazetted new regulations under the Midwives' Act amended from those which have been m existence since 1904.
The principal changes m these regulations deal with the fees payable for registration. Up to the present midwives trained outside New Zealand paid only 10s. for registration. This is now made £1, except m the case of nurses trained and registered as general nurses, when the fee is still 10s. — that is, 30s. for registration [under both Acts.
The annual notice of intention to practise, which under the previous regulations was to be accompanied by a fee of 25., is now to be sent without that fee, but failure to send the notice will now after two years' omission m succession lead to the removal of the midwife's name from the register.
Such midwives as are employed m the Government service or on the staff of public or private hospitals not engaged m midwifery work, and the matron and staff nurses of maternity hospital training schools are exempt from this clause.
The object of this notification is that the Registrar of Midwives should be acquainted with the occupation and whereabouts of the midwives on the register, and that there will not be a number of names on the register whose owners have left the Dominion or who have given up work. Midwifery nurses will, we hope, now understand how important it will be to send m their notices regularly, for although provision is made for the restoration of the name to the register, it is not a certainty.
The Editor wishes to thank the many nurses who, m sending their subscriptions, have expressed m one way or another their appreciation of the Journal. Such sentences as, "At times I have felt profes-
sionally lonely but the Kai TiAKi each quarter has always dispelled that feeling " from nurses away m the back-blocks, is a reward fo± the many hours of work given to its production.
