Auckland Branch
A Council Meeting was held, on March 16th, when there was a large attendance of members. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Dr. Andrew ; also Mrs. Aicken and Mrs. Avery. Mis. Todd-Smith presided, and welcomed the new members of Council. Miss Jones read a report received from the Central Council, on the matter of a Benevolent Scheme for Nurses, which it was hoped would be taken up by each branch, and formed into one organisation. The matter was discussed from several view-points, and the Council consideied that the time is premature for such an extensive scheme, and that while m sympathy with the movement as a very desirable and necessary one they think it advisable that each centre should, at first, deal with its own scheme, until the time is more ripe for a strong organisation together of all the branches. A motion to this effect was proposed by Miss Foote (President of Central Council), seconded by Mrs. Sanderson, and carried unanimously. It was mentioned that our Treasurer has m hand the nucleus of a Nurses' Sick Fund, on which fortunately, for so far, no call has been made. As the lease of our Club expires next month, a Committee was appointed to enquire about other properties with a view to acquiring a permanent building for the future. Dr. Maguire kindly consented to act with Mrs. Kidd, Mrs. Moss, and Miss Foote. The number of Nurses on the Association register is now 170.
The 27th General Meeting of the Association was held on the 30th March, when there |was a good attendance. Drs. Maguire and C. Aubin were present. The President occupied the chair. Apologies were received from Miss Foote and Miss Morrison, and other members for non-attendance, owing to press of work. Minutes of the last meeting were read and passed. A statement prepared by the Hon. Treasurer was read, setting forth a proposal to raise money by debentures m order to purchase a section of land on which to build a Nurses' Home. The lease of the present Home will soon expire, and a more commodious and suitable house is urgently needed. A discussion followed and it was the unanimous opinion that an effort should be made to raise £1,000 as a beginning, by £10 debentures among the Nurses and their friends, and a sum of £300 was promised at the meeting. The members of the Association are to be circularised, and it is hoped that a ready and generous response will be made for this very necessary work. Arrangements were made for the Winter Session of Lectures. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mrs. Williams and express the deep sympathy of the Council at the loss of her daughter, Sister Marie Williams. Miss Lita Jones was unable to be present owing to a severe accident. We are glad to say Miss Jones is recovering and hopes soon to be about again.
