Miss Orr, the new Matron of the Auckland hospital, m an interview with a newspaper reporter expressed herself as greatly pleased with the hospital. She said : " ; Your hospital here is beautifully situated, and, as far as I have been able to see from my first walk round, it is an excellently appointed institution. . . In fact, speaking from first sight, I honestly think your hospital would compare with almost any of those I have seen at Home.

Miss Orr is m favour of State Registration, m fact considers it for the benefit of the nursing profession, just as much as it is for the benefit of the general public. She thinks it is as necessary, as was the midwives Act, and would prevent many unfit women from posing as qualified nurses. With regard

to the hours of nurses Miss Orr said the nursing staff at Auckland hospital was a good deal larger than the staff of a similar sized hospital m England, but added that the eight hours system was not m vogue there. The nurses did about ten hours daily, but with the whole day off duty a month and a fortnights' holiday, she did not consider the time excessive. In London the hours are better and would really amount, with the time off duty, to about the same as those worked here under the eight-hours' system When Miss Orr has been here about a year we shall hope to hear from her what her experience of the eight-hours' system would lead her to advise as the best m the interests of patients and nurses.
