Wellington
On the evening of 1 lth February, a number of our nurses assembled m the drawingroom of the Nurses' Home, to bid farewell to Mrs. Kendall, who has left for a two-years' trip to England. At the close of a pleasant evening Miss Stewart, on behalf of the members, asked Mrs. Kendall's acceptance of a dressing-case and travelling-rug, as an expression of good-will. Accompanying the present was a small autograph album, containing signatures of many of the nurses. Mrs. Kendall carries with her our heartiest good wishes for a pleasant trip, and a safe return to New Zealand. A general meeting of nurses was held on 28th February, the business being to arrange for lectures during the winter months. The following syllabus has been drawn up :— 7th April, "Abortion/ Dr. H. McLean;
25th May, "Typhoid/ Dr. Collins; 22nd June, " Nursing m China," Mr. Hwang (Chinese Consul) ; 27th July, " Sanitation," Dr. Frengley ; 24th August, "Goitre," Dr. Ewart ; 28th September, Dr. Elliott ; 26th October, " Care of the Infant," Miss Brown. It is hoped that nurses will show their appreciation of these lectures by attending as often as possible. On 16th March an address to midwives was given by Miss Wood, of Napier. Her subject was " Caesarean Section," and proved most interesting and instructive to those present. The Council would like to thank nurses for their spontaneous response to an appeal on behalf of a sick nurse, who, m a letter of acknowledgment to the Secretary, says :
v Tell the nurses how grateful I feel to them, and thank them for their great kindness. " Nurses will regret to hear that Miss Kohn has been obliged to resign her position on the Council of the Association. She left last week on a trip to Sydney, for change and rest. We trust that she will benefit greatly by the rest, and return to us with renewed health. Mrs. Gibbs has been elected President of the Association At a meeting of the Council on 4th April, the designation badge for the Association was discussed, and one selected. The Council considered that the decision of the Central Council that the addition of a letter indicating the branch which the member had joined, would be all that was necessary. To be worn attached to the State Registration badges, general and midwifery. For those members who are not State registered, a little safety-pin, with the red or blue enamel letter, would suffice. There are not a great many of these members, and since the adoption of the rule for qualification of future members, decided upon at the Central
Council meeting, the number will not increase. The circular letter re badge was then sent on to Christchurch for consideration by the Canterbury branch. The large number of nurses on the bureau list of the Association w T as referred to the Council for consideration, and it was moved by Miss Maclean, and seconded by Mrs. Holgate : " That the number should be limited to the average number of nurses required for work \n Wellington and the country districts. As vacancies occur, these should be filled by members of the Association waiting for enrolment ; and that surplus work should be given to these members." As this can only affect future members, and is a matter for the management of the Home Bureau, it was not necessary to refer to a general meeting, and the motion was carried. vSome method of the very important ques tion of election of members was discussed, and referred to the next meeting, the members of Council being asked to come prepared with some definite proposals for consideration.
