New Plymouth Hospital
On Wednesday evening, 18th August, Miss Browne, Matron of the New Plymouth Hospital, gave a very pleasant little evening to the nurses and a few of their friends, in honour of the four candidates who had passed the recent Hospital and State Examinations. Part of the corridor was tastefully decorated with spring flowers and arum lilies, together with dainty white and green screens, lounges, etc., forming a pretty entrance to the nurses' dining room, which had been transformed for the time being into a nicely arranged sitting room, where cards were indulged in until 9.30 p.m. Dr. Leatham then made reference to the success of the nurses who had passed the Hospital and State Examinations, and the very great credit due to Miss Browne for the very kindly interest she had taken in helping the nurses both in their theoretical and practical work. lie would also like to take the opportunity of congratulating Nurse Muir on winning Mr. Wylie's prize for topping the N.P. list,
and Nurse Harris for writing the best paper on Dr. Walker's lectures ; the prize being a beautiful hypodermic syringe. Dr. Walker followed with a few words of sound advice to the nurses, remarking that the nurses who went forth from the New Plymouth Hospital branded with theii hallmark of efficiency, so to speak, compared favourably with the best trained nurses in the Dominion. . Dr. I^eatharn then requested the chairman (Mr. Bellringer) to present the Hospital and State certificates to Nurses Truby, Muir, Kirk, and Barnitt, the Matron fastening their medals on. Dr. Home responded on behalf of the nurses in a humorous little speech. Iyight refreshments were then partaken of, the supper table being artistically arranged with trailing greens, narcissus, snowdrops, and violets. After supper a little music brought a pleasant and enjoyable evening to a close about 11 p.m.
