Lectures to the Untrained but Registered Midwives

In our issue of July, 1908, it was reported that courses of elementary lectures on midwifery had been arranged by the Registrar of Midwives, to be delivered by qualified medical men m the four chief centres of the Dominion, m the hope that as many as possible of the women engaged m maternity work would avail themselves of the opportunity of receiving the instruction which they had not before had an opportunity of obtaining. These lectures are now over, and m each centre a fair number of women attended and proved attentive and interested auditors. The doctors endeavoured to make their lectures as simple and practical as possible,

avoided the use of technical terms, and explained fully any points which the women did not understand ; all laid especial stress on the need of asepsis. The systematic inspection of midwives m the country districts has been fairly well commenced. The recently appointed inspector for this special work, Miss Bagley, has spent nearly three months m Southland and Otago districts, and has made herself acquainted with a very large number of the women working m those districts.
