Dunedin Trained Nurses' Association

Since the beginning of our second year our roll of membership has increased to 69 nurses, and 21 medical members. On August 18, Dr. Church gave us a most instructive address on "Acute Rheumatism," its causes, and modern methods of treatment, p.ud nursing. The lecture was listened to with close attention and appreciation. Our President, Dr. Will, occupied the chair, and a hearty vote of thanks to the lecturer was carried unanimously. On. August 20 a largely attended meeting of the midwifery nurses was held at St. Helens Hospital. Three doctors were present, and apologies were received from several others unavoidably prevented from attending. Dr. Will occupied the chair. A scale of fees, and a few rules for the protection and guidance of midwifery nurses and patients were drawn up. They have yet to be passed at a general meeting, and when printed I will forward a copy for publication in the Journal if the Editor will permit. On September 14, Dr. Malcolm, of the Otago University, gave a very interesting address on " Proteid Digestion/' illustrating his remarks with many interesting experiments of the different processes. The President being unable to attend, Miss Thomson occupied the chair. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer. Our Social Club committee have given us, twice every month, very enjoyable and successful little social afternoons Looking round on the happy animated faces of those assembled, and feeling the spirit of friendliness and goodfellowship these little gatherings have engendered, we know the Association is a success, and our best thanks are due to the kindly efforts of our Club committee. The latest of our afternoons was held in the Botanical Gardens. The weather was perfect, and all thoroughly enjoyed the bright sunshine and flowers, and did ample justice to the delicious tea and cakes provided by our hostess — one of that indefatigable committee. By kind permission of the Mayor, Mr. Tannock showed us round the Winter Gardens. I hope this is only the first of many out-door gatherings. On September 19, Miss Tombe, of Prospect House, gave a very pleasant evening at the Dominion tea rooms ; to give the

members of the T. N. A. and several of her nurse friends and others, an opportunity of meeting Miss Maude, of Christchurch, who was her guest for a few days. Miss Maude made a few remarks to us, but I am not going to try to tell you what she said. If you were lucky enough to be there I am sure you agreed with her, they were very jolly remarks, and they had nothing to do with nursing ; they were withal full of sound common sense. We all enjoyed the evening, and also the opportunity of meeting Miss Maude and Sister Rose, also a guest from Christchurch. As an Association we wish Miss Maude and Sister Rose a very happy holiday and good luck for their journey, and look forward to welcoming them on their return and hearing all about it. We are glad to see Auckland and Christchurch are both starting Associations. We wish them every success, and hope some day New Zealand will have its N.Z. Trained Nurses' Association, with a branch in each centre.

(We have been asked to publish the following, which was received too late for last issue of Journal.) Miss Jeffreys, Hon. Sec, Trained Nurses' Association, Dunedin. Dear Madam, — I have been deputed by the Association to tender their thanks to you for the excellent work you have done on its behalf, not only as Secretary of the Association, but also of the Bureau. At the general meeting on Saturday, Jure 27th, the members present were unanimous in their expressions of appreciation, and desired me to forward you the enclosed amount that you might get something as a token of the esteem in which they hold you, and as a mark of their appreciation of the work you have accomplished. Believe me to be, Sincerely yours, (signed) Alice M. M. Thomson. President, Trained Nurds' Association, 1907-1908. July Ist, 1908

Miss Thompson, President of Trained Nurses' Association, 1907-1908. Dunedin. Dear Madam, — I thank 3^ou for your kind letter, and wash to thank you and all the members very much for your generous gift. It is very nice indeed of you all, and I will buy something which I can keep in memory of a very happy year for me. The little I have been able to do for the Association has been a great pleasure, and more than repaid by the success we have obtained this year ; due to the excellent and united work of the Council. I would like to take this opportunity of telling the members to remember that the

permanent success of such an Association lies not with the excellence of the Council., or the energy of the secretary ; but with the united efforts of each individual member. Only when each member realises that by her individual work as a nurse and a woman, thorough, honest, and to the very best of her ability, can she keep up that high standard of nursing which it is our aim as a Trained Nurses' Association, to maintain. Thanking you all once more, I am, dear Madam, Very sincerely yours, C. G. Jeffreys. Hon. Sec, Trained Nurses' Association July sth, 1908.
