There is a rumor in town that Mr. H. D. 8011, tho champion of the holy cause of Isittism-cum-Stoutism, is to bo tho financial backer of Mr. Joseph Evison (lato Ivo of tho nationalist, the extinct “ freethought” organ), in the establishment of a weekly paper in Wellington, to bo run in the Prohibitionist interest. * ;fc Great indignation has been caused by tho nows of tho Sor-geant-at-arms appointment. There is no gainsaying the fact that there are fully twenty or thirty gentlemen who lmvo boon passed over, any one of whom would have boon far moro suitable for the ppsition than is Colonel-Captain-Mr.-I3ill Frazer. Some very nasty things are boing said about the appointment, and when Parliament meets there will be some *• straight talk’’ over this matter. * * ijt Congratulations, however, to Mr. Thomas Bracken and his appointment. There’s no better hearted man in tho colony than the author of “ Paddy Murphy’s Epistols from Lambton Kay. ’ but ever since he left the Saturday Advertiser in Dunedin, ho has had the very worst of bad luck, and tho present stroko of good fortune, modest as it is, will no doubt bo a very welcome change. The appointment is one of tho best the Government have made for a long;fime past, and will meet with very general approval. The salary is <6225 per year.
